I raise up my voice— not so I can shout but so that those without a voice can be heard...we cannot succeed when half of us are held back. —Malala Yousafzai

Inclusion

This month’s focus is on inclusion, the practice of every child receiving the support needed to actively participate in everyday activities in classrooms and communities with their peers. The 15-minute in-service suite, Curriculum Modifications: An Introduction (ECLKC), offers an overview of eight types of curriculum modifications for children of varying abilities. Teachers can apply these simple changes to classroom activities to increase a child’s engagement and learning.

Visit the Head Start Center for Inclusion to understand the overarching goal of increasing the competence, confidence, and effectiveness of personnel in Head Start programs to include children with disabilities. Look here for training materials, tools for all early childhood teachers and coordinators, as well as other resources.

Updated! The Division for Early Childhood (DEC) has revised its DEC Recommended Practices to ensure families and professionals working with young children at risk for developmental delays and disabilities have the most current guidance in improving learning outcomes and promoting positive development. DEC’s Recommended Practices bridges the gap between research and practice, offering the latest and most effective recommendations to families and individuals working with children from birth to age five.

Individualized Teaching, Media Library

The EarlyEdU Alliance media librarians have assembled an individualized teaching professional development package containing materials demonstrating teaching strategies that meet a child's specific learning goals. All Alliance members are invited to create a media library password to access these comprehensive and valuable resources that can be downloaded and streamed for educational courses, presentations, and professional development opportunities. Not a member? Sign-up for an Alliance membership today!

Share Your Voice!

The Power to the Profession National Task Force is sharing its current decision cycle draft for review and response: Decision Cycles 7 + 8. These Decision Cycles address the resources, infrastructure, and accountability structures needed across states and systems to support a prepared, diverse, well-compensated early childhood education profession. Review the Decision Cycle and share your feedback via an online survey.

Modules and More: Inclusion

This month’s selection from the EarlyEdU Alliance multimedia resources is a spotlight on inclusion. These resources are available to use in your teaching or professional development activities. Go to the Modules and More page on our website to download and use the videos in your work. The videos will be available for one month and then added to the media library. Access to the complete library is available to EarlyEdU members only. Please consider Joining the EarlyEdU Alliance.
