Planning Ahead

The past few months have reminded us that our students will need to be prepared to work in challenging and quickly changing environments. As we gear up to reopen our child care centers, it is important to help our students support the children in their care. In this newsletter, we hope to highlight efficient resources to help educators and care providers address re-opening programs after unexpected closures. It is hoped that these resources will facilitate children easily transitioning back into their old routine. We will also highlight important webinars which explore how to cultivate anti-racist early childhood spaces. It is important that we both profess the importance of anti-racism and work towards putting it into action.

Covid-19 Specific Resources

The National Center for Pyramid Model Innovations (NCPMI) has provided a plethora of resources which help students adapt to the new measures we have put in place to protect our health and safety. They've provided a scripted story about wearing masks, a greeting board that provides helpful visuals that take into account social distancing, and a scripted story about washing hands to stay safe and healthy. Finally, they have also provided a tip sheet which helps children to identify emotions on their care giver's face when it's mostly obscured. These tips will help convey that behind the mask lies a warm, kind expression.

The Early Childhood Technical Assistance Center (ECTA) has provided helpful resources about coronavirus that will help parents and teachers navigate this pandemic.

Finally, the Division for Early Childhood (DEC) has also shared resources that can support early childhood special education efforts in light of Covid-19.

Webinars on Anti-Racism

These webinars allow us to deepen our commitment to anti-racism. Creating Anti-Racist Early Childhood Spaces presents strategies for creating an anti-racist environment to promote the development of healthy racial identities. Vital Conversation with Young with Young Children about Race Part 1 and 2 explore some challenging topics and engage in important discussions about equity, black lives, and racism.

In light of the current phenomenon, DEC has also shared a statement on racism and inequity. It affirms the organization's commitment to actively engage in anti-racist work.
