A Booming Renewable Energy Economy, 

8.1 Million Jobs and Counting


As the Tennessee Advanced Energy Business Council’s Economic Impact Report foretold in 2015, the advanced energy sector has but one direction to move in and that’s up.
 
A recent report released by the International Renewable Energy Agency - the Renewable Energy and Jobs Annual Review 2016 – shows that more than 8.1 million people worldwide are working in the global renewable energy industry. Renewables are one part of the advanced energy sector, but a growing sector at that.
 
And, in the U.S., for the first time jobs in solar energy overtook those in oil and natural gas extraction, helping drive a global surge in employment in the clean-energy business as fossil fuel companies began experiencing shaky ground.

TAEBC leads panel at Southeast Regional Energy Innovation Workshop

The Tennessee Advanced Energy Business Council recently participated in a Clean Energy Innovations panel during the Southeast Regional Energy Innovation Workshop hosted by TAEBC Charter members, The University of Tennessee and Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Chattanooga. Panelists included EPB, ORNL and Branch Technology. Topics discussed included the most pressing clean energy questions for the Southeast, the existing and potential economic impact on the region from clean energy.

Schneider Electric & EnergySage partner to promote home solar and energy efficiency

EnergySage, which allows homeowners to request and compare home solar quotes without leaving the house, and TAEBC member,  Schneider Electric, which offers products and services to help improve the management of energy (and increase energy efficiency), are running joint marketing campaigns intended to drive more awareness and uptake of home solar and home energy efficiency solutions. Construction progresses at the PHGE gasification plant in Tennessee

TAEBC member, PHG Energy says it is making progress on a gasification plant under construction in Lebanon, Tennessee. The company says it is quickly progressing from concrete foundations to the erection of steel structures. Read more here.

ORNL’s Titan propels GE beyond the limits of gas turbine testing

The search for efficiency gains led GE to tackle one of the most complex problems in science and engineering—instabilities in gas turbine combustors. The journey led the company to the Titan supercomputer at TAEBC Charter member, Oak Ridge National Laboratory. Read more here.

Dow partners with ORNL to commercialize advanced energy-saving sealant for buildings

A liquid flashing product invented by Dow and evaluated at TAEBC Charter member, Oak Ridge National Laboratory can be brushed or sprayed on surfaces to seal gaps, cracks, and seams and improve a building’s energy efficiency. Read the full story here.

US microgrid growth beats estimates: 2020 capacity forecast now exceeds 3.7 gigawatts

Since the beginning of the year, 13 newly commissioned U.S. microgrid projects have been deployed. A new forecast from GTM research anticipates a 30 percent increase in 2020 cumulative operational capacity -- now exceeding 3.7 gigawatts. Read more here.

EERE success story—Zero-order reaction kinetics coding is designing the next-generation engines

A computer code developed by a trio of Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) researchers has significantly advanced predictive computer science for designing next-generation car and truck engines. The code, dubbed Zero-order Reaction Kinetics (Zero-RK) and known as an advanced solver, is an innovative computational method. Read the full story here.

Southern US states lead growth in biomass electricity generation

Over the past five years, U.S. electricity generation from biomass across all sectors grew from 56 terawatthours (TWh) in 2010 to 64 TWh in 2015. Much of this growth occurred in southern states such as Virginia, Florida, and Georgia. Read more here.

Electric car sales increased globally in Q1 2016

Global electric vehicle sales figures for Quarter 1 2016 were recently released by EV-Volumes (along with preliminary figures for April), revealing that plug-in sales in 2016 to date totaled 180,500 units. That’s a roughly 42% year-on-year increase as compared to the same period of time in 2015. Read the full story here.
