Advanced industries present local opportunity

TAEBC member, Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL)’s Tom Rogers, wrote a guest column for the Knoxville News Sentinel, about key attributes that are attracting a cluster of successful advanced industries and companies to East Tennessee. 

“… we have a real opportunity to build a cluster of advanced industries around manufacturing and materials that can provide a unique competitive advantage that will benefit all of us for many years to come,” said Rogers.

Schneider Electric announces its newest addition to its PowerLogic portfolio

Schneider Electric launched the PowerLogic PM8000 series, which is a new compact line of meters with superior accuracy and enhanced power and quality functionality. The new series simplifies power quality compliance monitoring and analysis to rapidly pinpoint and address critical power issues. Read full press release here.

Balfour Beatty Investments consortium reaches financial close on Welland Waste Wood Power Station

Balfour Beatty Investments announced that it has reached a financial close on a £51.6m advanced conversion technology waste wood power station located in Northhamptonshire. The project will take 26 months to complete but once completed the project will convert 60,000 tons of dry waste wood feedstock into 9MW of electricity. Read full article here.

ORNL scientist research how to produce biofuels more efficiently

Scientists focused on producing biofuels more efficiently have a new powerful dataset to help them study the DNA of microbes that fuel bioconversion and other processes. In paper researchers of ORNL describe the methods and results for sequencing microbes so they can be modified and optimized to convert waste into fuel. Read full press release here.


More solar farms headed to East Tennessee

The two companies that spearheaded Powerhouse Six in Oak Ridge are now launching similar projects in Knox and Cumberland Counties. Construction for these new solar arrays will begin in June and they will provide enough clean energy to run 133 average-sized homes a year. Read full story here.

Nissan receives 2015 ENERGY STAR Partner of the Year Award

Nissan’s efforts to reduce energy usage in their facilities, along with their initiative to help 30 schools make the ENERGY STAR certification list, earned Nissan the 2015 Partner of the Year for Sustained Excellence Award. This award is given to organizations to recognize their commitment to becoming more energy efficient. Read full story here.

“Top 5 Industries in Tennessee” includes energy, manufacturing

The State of Tennessee was named State of the Year for economic development for two years in a row and is the first state in the award’s history to win back-to-back honors. With the growth of Tennessee’s top 5 industries including manufacturing and energy, the state hopes to see continuing economic development. Read the full story here.

TVA Draft Integrated Resource Plan Public Meetings

TVA is hosting public meetings for the public to comment on TVA’s Draft 2015 Integrated Resource Plan (IRP). The last two meetings are in Nashville on April 21 and in Bowling Green, Kentucky on April 22. Click here for more details on the public meetings.
