End of Semester Update

Thankful

At the end of the first semester of RUF at Mississippi State, the word that comes to mind is thankful. Thankful for the wonderful staff we get to work with. Thankful for the staff of the past, the fruit of whose labors we get to see and partake in. Thankful for our ministry partners whose financial support and prayer allows us to minister to students. Thankful for the students we’ve gotten to know and love.
But most of all, we are thankful for the ways the Lord is at work on the campus of Mississippi State and in students’ lives.

Fall Retreat

We had Fall Retreat at Laguna Beach in Florida during the students' fall break. It was a good time for students to relax and rest in the middle of the semester and build community with people who they were already friends with or people they had never met before. It was good for staff as we got to spend a lot of unstructured time around students and get to know them in a laid back environment. We ended each night with a time of worship.

One of the freshmen students (pictured to the left) in RUF summed up why he liked fall retreat:
"Fall retreat was amazing. It was super laid back so you could do what you wanted. I definitely recommend getting up to see the sunrise with a group of friends. We played a lot of spikeball and volleyball, but the cool ocean breeze was perfect for enjoying a book. Each night we went out to eat at the local restaurants and ended the night with worship. It was a refreshing break."

Barn Dance

One of Mississippi State's big events of the the year is the annual barn dance. People from church volunteer to make chili, there is a pie competition, and a night filled with bonfire and dancing. This event is an outreach to students who maybe wouldn’t come to a Bible study or small group because they do not feel comfortable in that setting but are more comfortable coming to a social event.

Freshmen Friendsgiving

A large part of our job is outreach to freshmen. We meet with them weekly in one-on-one settings but also come up with events for them to build community with each other. We ended the year with Freshmen Friendsgiving on campus. The interns got the turkey, sides, and drinks and some older students provided other sides and dessert. We had a huge turnout and had freshmen come who we had never seen before.

Elliott finished his series on Relating, Dating, and Mating at Large Group. It challenged students in how they viewed their relationships, not only in dating, but with God, the church, and their friends. It provided us with many great conversations with students and discussions focused on what having a God-centered relationship looks like. As students entered finals mode, we had many group centered events where we watched Christmas movies, ate a meal together, or just hung out, trying to combat stress from finals.

One of the RUF students commented on how RUF has impacted her life in the past year:

"RUF has made such a difference in my college experience. Coming into college, I had no idea what RUF was and I wasn’t sure about where I was spiritually. It was going to large group that the Lord used to spark my interest in theology and my own faith and I started growing more and more. The more I grew, the more I got plugged in to small groups and the church that I am now a member of. I am so thankful for the Lord’s graciousness in using RUF to introduce me to this church and for giving me some of my closest and dearest friends and mentors that have supported and encouraged me every step of the way."

Fundraising and Prayer Requests

As we are now in the year 2020 and entering the second semester of our internship, we are so thankful for your support. Your prayers and financial gifts have been invaluable to the work at Mississippi State. We truly would not be here without a ministry team like you. In addition, the Lord is impacting students' lives in very tangible ways. We would love to have you continue to partner with Mississippi State RUF. Your gift would allow us to spend more of 2020 focused on the work the Lord is doing on campus and investing in students. Now that we are in the new year, we ask that you pray for:
  • New opportunities to meet non-Christians on campus
  • Gospel conversations with students in and outside of RUF
  • Growth in small groups and large group
