A New Year

January allows us to evaluate our progress from the previous year and fine tune our goals for the upcoming 365 days.  2015 is looking like it will be a busy year for our national teams.  They will face Puerto Rico and Alberta Team Handball during the final week of February which will serve as a warm up for the "Last Chance" qualifier against Uruguay in March.  The Women's National Team will also compete in the Nor.Ca tournament in late March which will be a qualifier for the Pan American Championships later in the year.

We have already seen a new World Champion this year with France beating out tournament hosts Qatar in the finals.  It also saw a record number of viewers which we will break down later on.  For now, enjoy watching some of the top goals of the tournament.

Stateside, the USATH season is well underway with 3 tournaments already being played up to this point.  The Northeast Handball League and Western Handball League have had 2 tournaments and one respectively with more on the horizon.

National Teams

Both the Men's and Women's national teams will be going back to work against Uruguay in a month!  This home and away series will start March 7th at the campus of Auburn University in Alabama.  The following weekend will see Team USA travelling to Uruguay to finish up the Pan American Games Qualifier.   Each team per gender with the better goal differential will receive the final spot at the Pan American Games being held this July in Toronto, Canada.

Prior to the tournament, the teams will host the Alberta Men's Provincial Team, and the Women's National Team of Puerto Rico as a warm up.
Following the tournament, the Women's National team will compete in the Nor.Ca tournament which will qualify them for the Pan American Championships later in the year.  Last year, the Men finished third in this tournament which was held in Mexico City.

The Northeast Handball League is already off to a fast start with the Women already playing three tournaments and the men finishing up their third this weekend.  Here is where the teams stand prior to this weekend's tournament in Manhattan.
In the west, the San Francisco Cal Heat hosted the 9th California Cup.  Chicago Inter came away with a win while the women of Cal Heat finished first.  For more information, head over to the Western Handball League's website,  and for a highlight video of the tournament click here.  A video of the men's final match can also be found on their website.

2015 IHF World Championships

by the numbers...
Besides being used as a benchmark to see what country can be crowned as the world's best, the World Championships can also be used to evaluate the progress of handball in the eyes of the viewers of the sport.  More specifically, how many viewers watch the sport, where they are, and what games/countries they are interested in.  For starters, this year's World Championship was the most technically advanced yet.  All 88 games had the most cameras from the most angles including the first time a sky cam was used.  The sky cam allows a much more dramatic angle from above that can really show the dynamic and exciting nature of the sport.  Viewers from 150 countries were able to see the games on over 40 live TV stations with a total of 927 million cumulative viewers with 263 million of those being from Germany.  The quarter final game, which was a rematch of the 2013 final between Spain and Denmark attracted 98 million viewers worldwide.  To put that in perspective, this year's Superbowl played 3 days later was seen by 114 million people making it the most watched TV event in US history.  (Source IHF)
