LG Focus: BHRC Certified Fresh
The Bunbury Harvey Regional Councils’ organic waste facility is now Australian Certified Organic. The outputs from the facility are considered to be a high value resource, used by local farmers who are obtaining excellent results, that has also led to profit for the waste facility.
“Attainment of organic certification puts the Banksia Road Organics Processing Facility amongst the leaders in composting in Australia,” said Tony Battersby, CEO of the Bunbury Harvey Regional Council.

“We literally feed the earth food scraps and organic waste to produce more nutritious local food and produce.”

The material taken to the facility is processed into quality certified organic compost which is being used on pastures, in vegetable production and orchards in Manjimup, Capel and Binningup. Intuit Earth provides expert consulting services and supports farmers to utilize the compost manufactured at the Banksia Road facility.

The Banksia Road Organics Processing Facility gives local communities from the City of Bunbury and Shires of Collie, Donnybrook-Balingup and Capel the opportunity to play a role in diverting waste from landfill to produce a high quality organic compost product being used on local farms. The Bunbury Harvey Regional Council is also keen to take waste from other councils in the region.

Dirty Business
The Waste Team recently took part in a Waste Audit of the general waste and green waste bins at Western Metropolitan Regional Council Transfer Station.
The general waste from 90 households, within the Town of Cottesloe, was sorted and green waste and recyclables removed. Amongst the sloppy food waste, nappies, pet waste, maggots and flies we separated out plastics, glass, metal, paper and cardboard.

Green waste from 180 households was also sorted. This was a much more pleasant task and there was very little contamination.
The Waste Team will be heading to Southern Metropolitan Regional Council to audit the recycling bin later this month.
