Get Waste Certified Now
Register by Friday, 3 March for the new Certificate III in Waste Management, a nationally recognised qualification developed by WALGA for those working in waste management, Local Government, or the private sector.
This seven day course will run March to August and consists of 17 nationally recognised units of competency, including monitoring a waste disposal site, manually sort waste, respond to waste emergencies and prepare waste for reuse.

Delivered by Franklyn Scholar, the qualification will provide a hands on approach on a broad range of different areas of waste management activities, suitable for those working directly in the waste management area at a practical level, such as landfills, transfer stations or waste treatment facilities.
The first intake of the Cert III will begin in March, register on the WALGA training website.
Tyre’d yet?
WALGA has recently been joined Tyre Stewardship Australia as an Accredited Local Government Participant.
Tyre Stewardship Australia are the product stewardship organsation tasked with implementing the voluntary tyre product stewardship scheme.

As part of joining, WALGA has written to the WALGA Preferred Supplier Panel for the supply, fitting and maintenance and recycling of tyres to congratulate organisations already members of TSA and to invite non-members to join and become accredited.

WALGA will also include a requirement for TSA participation in future Preferred Supplier Agreements and in internal contracts for WALGA fleet tyres.
WALGA strongly encourages all Local Governments to join TSA. For more information on Tyre Stewardship Australia, please visit the website.
Container Deposit Scheme Stretch
The NSW Container Deposit Scheme implementation date has been extended by five months following requests from environment groups and industry bodies, including Clean Up Australia and Boomerang Alliance.
The container deposit scheme will now be rolled out from Friday, 1 December, in order to ensure maximum possible state-wide coverage from day one.
For more information visit the NSW EPA website.
Mattress Migration
Thank you to the Local Governments that provided WALGA with details on mattress illegal dumping.
Following reports from the Shire of Gingin, City of Cockburn and several other Local Governments, WALGA surveyed metropolitan Local Governments for information on locations and number of mattresses dumped in the last six months.

WALGA have met with DER and will be working with them to progress the issue.
Local Governments in the metropolitan area are encouraged to continue to report dumping of multiple mattresses to WALGA. Please send the number of dumped mattresses and their location to Waste Management Support Officer Ariane Katscherian.
