LG Focus: Verge Valet
Verge Valet Peppermint Grove has gone live!
Shire of Peppermint Grove residents can now book a bulk waste or garden organics collection throughout the Shire on any Monday from 8 March.

This collaboration between the Shire and Western Metropolitan Regional Council benefits residents by giving them the option to select a date that is convenient for them, while also giving rise to a 3.5% discount to be applied on the collection costs for all Verge Valet host Local Governments, including the Town of Cambridge.

To find out more about this VIP service, visit the Western Metropolitan Regional Council website.

Getting Technical
Following the passage of the national Recycling and Waste Reduction Act 2020, the Australian export ban for mixed plastics will commence on 1 July 2021.
The national Recycling and Waste Reduction Act 2020 provides the legislative head of power for the Federal Government to implement the various export bans for glass, plastics, paper, cardboard and tyres. The Act allows the Federal Minister to prescribe kinds of waste material, then regulate this waste material and its export – unless certain conditions prescribed in the export conditions are met.

The Technical Discussion Paper, released by the Department of Agriculture, Water and Environment on 22 January, was the first step in regulating the export of waste plastic. The Discussion Paper states:

From 1 July 2021, waste plastic can only be exported if it has been sorted into single resin or polymer types, or processed with other materials into processed engineered fuel. From 1 July 2022, waste plastic can only be exported if it has been sorted into single resin or polymer types and has been further processed, or processed with other materials into processed engineered fuel.

The WALGA Submission can be viewed here.

Review of the Covenant
The Department of Agriculture, Water and the Environment is undertaking a review of the Australian Packaging Covenant Organisation and the associated legislation.
The Department has prepared a Consultation Paper and is seeking stakeholder feedback via an online survey or written submission. Use the link to the Department’s Have Your Say consultation platform to comment. Please note that you will need to register with the Have Your Say platform in order to make a submission.

The consultation now closes Friday, 12 March (it has been extended by one week).

WALGA will be making a Submission to the Review. If you would like to contribute, please email Rebecca Brown, WALGA Manager Waste and Recycling or call on (08) 9213 2063.

Right to Repair
The Productivity Commission has taken the first step in its inquiry into the Right to Repair in Australia.
An online survey conducted by WALGA showed over 95% of Local Government respondents supported Federal action to introduce laws to improve consumers’ Right to Repair options. WALGA made a short Submission based on feedback from Local Government.

A draft report is expected from the Productivity Commission in June 2021. When the draft report is released the Commission will seek further information and feedback.
For more information, visit the Australian Government Productivity Commission website.
