Black History Month is a time to honor, reflect, and celebrate the challenges and success of the Black community. It is important to remember that Black History Month didn't always exist. Many, many people, such as Fannie Lou Hamer and Martin Luther King Jr., campaigned and worked for the national acknowledgment of Black individuals and their history in the United States. There is still a long road ahead to reach racial equity in this country, but RISE stands with the Black community and will do everything we can to support them in allyship. We also stand in solidarity as allies to immigrants and refugees of the African diaspora. We appreciate and respect all cultures, languages, and work to make RISE a place of inclusion where people from all backgrounds feel welcome and heard.
Know Your Rights
Thank you to Laura Lichter from Lichter Immigration for sharing resources with our families through a "Know Your Rights" workshop. Families were able to better understand their rights and ask pertinent questions. This month we held two Know Your Rights workshops for families where we provided a safe space to create preparedness plans and speak about their thoughts and questions regarding recent actions taken by the federal government.
Pathways to College Field Trip
Over 50 family members and students from Aurora Public Schools joined us at the University of Denver to experience life on a college campus. Families and students enjoyed a presentation, student panel, and campus tour. Speaking directly with current DU students was a highlight of the trip and families are already asking when the next college visit will be! It is crucial that families and students understand the possibilities and opportunities available in higher education. Our Pathways to College Field Trips support families to understand how to navigate and prepare for college.
Family Advisory Council
Families are gathering weekly at the RISE office to help create Core Values for the organization. As a family-led organization, it is essential that families guide and approve of the governing systems we have in place. Our core values define our beliefs and actions as an organization and we are grateful to our families that have supported us in the creation of these guiding values.
