The last several months at RISE have been filled with workshops focused on educating families about the APS Innovation Plans. Families and community leaders gathered together and shared an open dialogue regarding how families can support implementation of the Innovation plans to ensure their children's academic achievement and school's success. Families made a direct ask to be involved in the implementation of the innovation plans and look forward to joining committees to support their schools in the Fall.
RISE would like express our sincere gratitude to all participants. School leaders, district officials, school board members, and community partners addressed the specific questions and feedback that was raised by parents. Their willingness to participate in an event structured around open communication with families shows their commitment to strengthening the relationship between students, families, and schools.
Parent leaders were excited to have this open discussion and to hear the thoughts and comments shared from community members. It took great courage for them to speak so openly to a large crowd full of community leaders for whom they have great respect. The audience's support of the families was palpable and this support is crucial to building up their confidence and voice.
We would also like to thank Mango House for their generous support of Aurora families and for providing space for the event. Mango House is a flourishing community center for Northwest Aurora and the resources and support they provide are invaluable. Thank you, Dr. PJ!
Families and Schools Combine Forces
Burmese RISE Parent Leaders have taken their involvement in the Aurora Public Schools Innovation Zone Plans to a new level! Parents met with Crawford Elementary School Principal, Ms. Passchier, and Community Liaison, Ms. Garvin, to share their thoughts around the school's Innovation Plan, provide feedback, and discuss how families can be included in implementation. Family engagement is a crucial element to Innovation success and we thank Ms. Passchier for prioritizing families!
University of Denver Research Focus Groups
Professor Judy Kiyama and her research team are partnering with RISE to learn about families' education aspirations for their children. Partnering with DU in this research is a fantastic way to learn about families' experiences with their child's education and the role that RISE plays in supporting them. We look forward to continuing this research over the coming months!
Leadership for Educational Equity
Veronica had a great time in NYC for the Leadership For Educational Equity (LEE) Venture Fund and Fellowship ED Bootcamp! She facilitated the Women of Color Entrepreneurs lunch and had the opportunity to learn with incredible entrepreneurs changing the game for educational equity. LEE has been an invaluable partner to RISE. Thanks for your support LEE!
Thanks to the National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials (NALEO) for inviting RISE to their 33rd Annual Conference in D.C. We spoke about our work at RISE Colorado in the education track for the session, Bringing Power to Parents: The Age of New Education Assessments. It was an amazing experience meeting and speaking with incredible Latin@ elected officials from across the country working to end educational inequity in their communities.
Summer is finally here! We hope you all take this time to rejuvenate for the upcoming school year, but don't forget about the Summer Slide! Its important to keep our brains working during the Summer - for kids and adults. Summer is a great time to study up on Reading, Writing, and Math or you can take after this little one and get ahead on some of your college planning.
Summer is also a perfect time for the RISE team to hold our End of Year Staff Retreat. We value the opportunity to press pause and reflect on the past year. It is also a great chance to spend time enjoying each other, eating great food, and planning for what's next!
