Celebrating Black History Month
This month Trey and Avianna, Co-founder Veronica's kids, took Washington D.C. by storm!  They explored monuments and museums and took special time to learn about Martin Luther King Jr's life and legacy.

They had the opportunity to attend Teach for America's 25th Anniversary Summit. They along with our students and families in Aurora are our future. We do this work every day for our children and families, and it was a pleasure to have them and RISE member Diana and her children join us as we discussed the importance of educational equity.

Martin Luther King Jr. believed that those most impacted by inequity must lead the movement for justice if true change is to ever exist. In starting RISE we looked to the lessons and great leaders of the Civil Rights movement. We work to honor the legacies of many great African American, Latino, Native and AAPI leaders in our work each day, and we were glad to have some time to share those reflections this month. At RISE we believe low-income families and families of color MUST lead the movement for educational equity because they are most impacted by the inequity that exists in our public school system. We work hard every day to educate, engage, and empower low-income families and families of color to RISE as change agents for educational equity. As we celebrate Black History Month, we also celebrate the power of the revolutionary movements led by African American leaders and other leaders of color who continue to inspire our work today!
RISE Impact
The Burmese Community continues to come together to demonstrate their passion for education and their desire to be leaders in the movement for educational equity in Aurora! We discussed the internal structures of the public education system in order to support families in better understanding how they can be involved in their children's education during the Navigating the School System Workshop.
The Somali Community gathered for a Parent Opportunity Gap workshop this month. They highlighted their community's drive to overcome the obstacles and statistics of the opportunity gap. RISE would like to thank our University of Denver volunteers for their tremendous help and support with the workshop. We are so fortunate to have their enthusiasm and expertise.
The Nepali Community continues to build themselves up into a powerful group of families ready and willing to put in the work necessary to ensure their children receive the excellent education they deserve!

RISE member, Diana Castro, spoke in the session Families: Our Students' Most Valuable Teachers. She was INCREDIBLE and spoke from the heart about her educational experiences as an immigrant to the U.S. and what she's doing as an APS parent and RISE member to support her children's education. Diana's husband and two children were able to join us for the trip. It was their first time traveling to D.C. and they go to do a lot of sight seeing including the White House, monuments, and U.S. Department of Education. We're incredibly thankful that the voice of families like Diana's and our work at RISE was elevated on a national level.
