Corrie's Story
As part of our Diversity and Equity professional development series, teachers, staff, and administrators at Jamaica Child Development Center (JCDC) reflected on the challenges, choices, and outcomes that brought them to education. This series was designed to strengthen staff culture and foster a deeper understanding of their ties to one another as education professionals. Corrie Whitfield, a preschool teacher at JCDC, shared her story about why she became a teacher. Thank you, Corrie, for allowing us to share your moving story and thank you for your dedication and hard work with our Aurora Public School students!

Family Learning Night
Jamaica Child Development Center and RISE recently co-hosted our first Family Learning Night event of the 2016-2017 school year.  Families gained skills to support their children's education at home.  Teachers presented topics such as Developing Critical Thinking, 1 to 1 Counting, ABC Print Awareness, and the Importance of Routines.  We love seeing families learning together! Thanks to all who attended and to the JCDC staff who presented at this great event.
Power, Privilege, & Intersectionality
Staff at Jamaica Child Development Center recently engaged in a workshop with RISE titled Power, Privilege & Intersectionality. They deepened their understanding of how power and privilege operate in their personal identities. They built empathy for one another by reflecting and sharing their experiences with their own identities. At the end, they identified individual and collective blind spots that might impact their ability to connect with each other, students, and families. We're very proud to see all the dedicated staff members take a courageous step forward in our Diversity & Equity workshop series.
