New Legacy Charter School and RISE Colorado Visit Auraria Campus
A RISE Colorado partnership is unique to each partner school. New Legacy Charter High School recognizes the importance of student exposure to higher education opportunities and RISE is there to help facilitate diverse and meaningful presentations and field trips preparing students for life after high school.
May was filled with in-school presentations and a half day trip to the Auraria Campus to hear from current students, tour the campus, and get practical admissions information.
New Legacy student, Steffani Garcia, speaks about her experience visiting the Auraria Campus.
Families and Schools Combine Forces
Nepali RISE Parent Leaders have taken their involvement in the Aurora Public Schools Innovation Zone Plans to a new level! Parents met with Aurora Central High School Principal, Mr. De La Garza, to share their thoughts around the Innovation Plan, provide feedback, and discuss how families can be included in implementation. Family engagement is a crucial element to Innovation success and we thank Principal De La Garza for prioritizing families!
RISE Preschool Families Collaborate with APS ECE Department
Thanks to Suzanne Rougier and Maureen Gurrini, from the Aurora Public Schools ECE department, for coming together with RISE parent leaders in collaboration around the new homework policy that will be added to the preschool teacher and parent handbooks in the 2016-2017 school year. RISE families prove daily that they value education and have the time and knowledge to advocate for their children to receive an excellent education.
New Legacy Charter School
College access comes with a distinct set of considerations for immigrant and refugee students. RISE and New Legacy are committed to providing as much information and resources as possible to reduce barriers that exists for students of color in receiving a college education.
A growing partnership with the MSU student organization, MSU Denver RISE, has led to in-school presentations from current college students who have navigated the higher education system as first generation college attendees. High school students had the opportunity to hear what programs and supports exist for immigrants, such as DACA and ASSET, and received advice on researching and applying for scholarships.

CU Nursing Program Presentation
Many New Legacy students have expressed interest in pursing a nursing career after graduation. To help facilitate this journey, the CU Nursing Program at Anshutz Medical Center came to speak with high school students. A college advisor and two current students covered several areas of interest ranging from how to get into the program to what a day in the life of a nurse is like.
End of Year Celebrations!
We have SO MUCH to celebrate this month between amazing school leaders, dedicated teachers and secretaries, and graduations. Let's take a moment to honor, celebrate, and thank our amazing community partners.
National Teacher Appreciation Week
We would like to thank ALL teachers for their hard work and dedication year round. It takes a full week to celebrate the passionate and dedicated teachers that partner with RISE Colorado and there's no better way to say, "Thank You!" than a luncheon filled with pizza, chicken wings, veggie trays, and dessert!
Teachers help shape future generations and we are honored to work alongside them to close the opportunity gap and end educational inequity. Thank you teachers for working countless hours to provide your students with the excellent education they deserve. We see you and appreciate all you do! #ThankATeacher
Here is Anita Walker, Jamaica CDC Principal, and Deb McCammond, Early Beginnings Principal, with a small token of our gratitude for the amazing work they do year round. These are just two of the many fabulous school leaders we work with at RISE and we feel so grateful to each and every one!
Let's celebrate the amazing secretaries that keep the wheels moving day after day in Aurora Public Schools. Sonia, Claudia, and Maria are dedicated and talented office managers that we are lucky to work with along with many more!
It's our favorite time of year- graduation season! From ECE to High School, students have wrapped up the 2016-2017 school year and are moving on to new classrooms and universities. We look forward to seeing what the future holds for Aurora graduates as they transition to the next phase of their educational careers. Congratulations and enjoy the summer graduates!
New Schools Summit
We were honored to receive scholarships to attend this years New Schools Summit in San Francisco. We learned a lot and appreciated the opening panel that focused on race, class, privilege and the importance of those most impacted by education inequity leading the movement. It was great catching up with friends from all over the country and meeting lots of new amazing folks within education.
