September 2014

September 2014 Astrology Trends

September opens with the focus remaining on the individual within their family and tribal relationships. Finding your way to clear space within your home and relationships is a good way to focus your energy, and any clearing and cleaning you may wish to do will receive extra support. You may feel extra giving, asking questions like: Who can really use these things now? Or Who can use my support at the present time? Or How can I best use my talents to help the earth and its inhabitants during my lifetime? Or What kind of a person am I going to be? In exploring your ethics and morals, you are also performing a clearing, ridding yourself of the influence of others and stepping into your own, self-determined inner environment. Jupiter’s gifts remain in play from last month through the first part of September, and Jupiter makes yet another aspect with Pluto on September 5 to ramp up the gifts of transformation and help us feel a boost to create a better world.

The Pisces full moon on September 8 asks us to truly melt into and meld with the divine energy we sense all around us. If we have developed a relationship with the non-physical energies in life, this is the time of the year, the very day of the year, to spend in deep contemplation on that relationship. We might as well meditate and relax and dream the whole weekend. It would be better than the lower-vibration expressions of Pisces—the Dionysian over-indulgences that can come in the form of wine, women/men, song, and whatever else we pick up. Instead, use the concepts of receptivity and Law-Of-Attraction type energy work to call your angels all around you like soft feather pillows and thick quilts to wrap yourself up in as we get ready to welcome... The Autumnal Equinox.

...which occurs on September 22 at 8:29 PM Mountain Time here in New Mexico! That is when the earth’s tilt allows for equal amounts of day and night on our globe—12 hours each—well almost—all across the world! As the Sun moves into Libra at that time and the abstract concepts of equilibrium and justice join the physical equinox event, we would do well to give ourselves time to breathe and meditate on our relationships to one another.

The Libra time can be a time of creative embrace of one another. The lower-level Libra problems include the phrase “Yeah, but…,” an intellectual insincerity and an ever-twisting mind that can get lost in a maze or haze of thinking that leads nowhere. The high-vibration, unifying Libra energy, however, builds the self-esteem of oneself and those around us. It is just and caring, and helps us to find balance. It knows itself by the harmony it expresses. It is art and all art forms; truly spectacular.

Through practices such as appreciation and acceptance, we can begin each day of the Libra period on the right track. It'll be possible to find heights previously unknown in order to express ourselves creatively during late September and into busy, busy, busy (did I say busy?) October.

The Libra New Moon on September 24 is an opportunity to get your prayers and wishes in for these very themes, to start your creative projects, to start new relationships, to sign agreements prior to Mercury retrograde next month. This is a highly auspicious time to start new things!!

Not only is there a New Moon, but Mars, Jupiter and Uranus are all in a Grand Trine, which is a major beneficial aspect. Between September 26 and October 12, I’d act early, though, because Mercury retrograde is coming October 4th… If you have any major purchase(s) to make, this month is better than next month, astrologically speaking.

The Sun meets up with Uranus and Pluto in a T-Square on September 28, meaning that it moves into relationship with the revolutionary changes happening during the 15-year or so cycle that Pluto and Uranus are dancing us through. This is a major Capricorn / Aries aspect that Astrologers all over have been talking about extensively for the past decade. With the sun meeting up this month in a stress aspect, our focus may shift to the world stage a bit from September 28 through October 9. Alternatively, you may find yourself looking at your personal expression in the world and reviewing your actions and behavior.

One  influence that may make September flow quite nicely is that Venus (ruled by Libra) and Mercury (ruled by Virgo) are in what is called mutual reception (see learning astrology below). Mercury will be in Libra through September 27 and Venus will be in Virgo until September 29. So writing and communicating will be easier with Venus supporting them and expressing yourself in relationships will be easier with Mercury’s abilities for talking and communicating. Relax with your loved ones and have some nice cups of tea and conversation! Or have the dinner party you’ve been meaning to have all year.

Oh, did I mention you might want to get your naps in during September?

Planets in Mutual Reception:

Since Venus and Mercury are in mutual reception this month, I thought I might explain more about this concept in astrology. Each planet has a “home” sign, kind of like an ambassador has a home country but might be working in a foreign country. Sometimes, planets even have dual citizenship. This is the case with both Venus and Mercury, in fact. Venus is at home in both Taurus and Libra. Mercury is at home in both Gemini and Virgo. The reason for this is that there are 10 planets while there are 12 signs.

The home signs of the planets are as follows:

Aries:  Mars
Taurus: Venus
Gemini: Mercury
Cancer: Moon
Leo: Sun
Virgo: Mercury
Libra: Venus
Scorpio: Pluto and Mars
Sagittarius: Jupiter
Capricorn: Saturn
Aquarius: Uranus
Pisces: Neptune

These home signs are the signs in astrology that are the ruling signs of these planets. Pisces, being Neptune's home sign, is said to “rule” Neptune. When Astrologers talk about sign rulership, this is what they mean. They might also say the Moon is ruled by Cancer.

So, if the Sun is in Aries and Mars is in Leo, the planets are said to be in mutual reception. It’s like the ambassadors are in each other’s countries and they have a unique relationship. They could travel back and forth on their countries' respective Air Force jets. The arrows on the map form a closed circuit. Astrologically speaking, the energies are strengthened and enhanced, for better or for worse.

However, if the Sun is in Virgo and Mercury is in Aquarius, there is none of this mutual reception happening, and this special relationship is not going on. It’s just two random ambassadors out there traveling.

There are lots of other factors: the aspects that are formed in a natal astrology chart, the houses that the planets fall in, which of the planets is the stronger player, and more. Interpretation is an art, always! But this is a little about the concept of how mutual reception strengthens the bond between planets in both transiting (currently moving) planets and natal charts.

Body of Appreciation

How’s your body right now? Are you relaxed? From head to toe? Where’s your tension? Were you busy today or has it been a calm day so far?

I like to pause these days before I take an action. One of the most important and sacred actions revolve around appreciation. And appreciation is something we should do often as part of each and every day.

Appreciation is very good for our own health as well as the world around us. It leads to smiles and joy. It leaves very nice energy in our wake wherever we walk. If I am in doubt about what to say, I find something to appreciate. If I need to change the subject, I find something to appreciate. If I need to heal myself or attend to behavior in myself that I don’t want to continue, I go on an appreciation overhaul, which means I appreciate until I fall asleep.

I just stop whatever else is activated in me because I know I can trust the energy of gratitude. Its warm arms are like the arms of a loving mother—always looking upon us with only the best of intentions. And it helps me look at the world that way.

However, appreciation is not done with empty words. It begins long before a word is spoken. It begins in the body. So a pause to observe your body is the very best way to deepen your energy of appreciation so it goes through each of your cells.

Start with your feet. Are they firmly planted on the ground? Can you feel your connection to the earth? Do you feel your connection to the living things of this world before you say your thank you for what is in front of you that you love so much? You can wiggle your toes and become aware of your heels, or feel your feet stretch alongside the ground you are on. Just resting your awareness in your feet is good.

Then observe your legs and hips. Are they relaxed? Have you loosened the tension that we often keep there before speaking or acting in appreciation? Is your posture stable? Are your knees fluid?

Then your pelvis and the organs in your lower torso. Are they relaxed? You can send a smile through your whole digestive system or gut, knowing how much it really runs your life. If it is in harmony, you have a lot to give to a world where so many people’s guts and digestive systems are out of balance. This might sound funny, but it is a HUGE part of our ability to be relaxed and say thank you to have a gut that is free from churning.

Then onto your spine. From your sacrum up, are you well-supported by your spine? Even if you have spinal issues, are you as well supported as possible? You deserve such support and love throughout your life, and the spine lets us know about our sense of support. Before we begin to support others, how is our own sense of support in this moment? Send our attention and love to strengthen life’s support for ourselves, too, for at least this moment.

Next, our shoulders and arms. Can we lengthen and give ourselves some room in these areas where so much tension is carried for so many of us? We might need some space here. We might know in this moment that we are carrying too much burden and become aware that we will lay down some responsibilities. While we are appreciating, we need think of nothing else except the beauty that is before us. Here is where we concentrate on beauty and think of nothing else. Lay down all those other responsibilities. Let them go. They will go as they go, and we see that worry and additional thoughts are a waste of time.

This leads to the neck and head. Here is where we also lengthen and connect to the heavens. Can we smile with our eyes, soften behind our lips, open the top of our brains to the universe, breathe in and out a few times, even become aware of our ears relaxing. Smile inside. Smiling inside is so nice, as Thich Nhat Hanh says so often. He is right.

And then think thoughts about our environment and the people we love. And then speak. And then act.

Nourishment for the Body and Soul

Apple Chard Farrow

Farrow, also known as spelt or emmer, is a whole wheat grain. Barley and farrow are often substituted for one another. I used a quick-cooking farrow that came packaged here. True, raw farrow may require overnight soaking.

Yield: about 8 servings

4 TBSP Butter or Sunflower/Olive Oil
2 Cups Quick-Cook Farrow
4 Cups Chicken or Vegetable Broth
2 Medium Apples
1 Red or Yellow Onion
1 Bunch Chard (I used organic green chard), washed and chopped stems and all
2 cloves garlic, smashed and diced or pressed
OPTIONAL: top with the protein of your choice

In pan or in your pot, if you want to keep it all in one pot and do fewer dishes, brown the farrow in 2 TBSP butter for a few minutes over medium high heat. When it is just brown, transfer it into a rice cooker or another pot for cooking separately.

Add the 4 cups of broth to the farrow and cook until it has absorbed the liquid broth and is tender. If you’re using a pot instead of a rice cooker, bring the mixture to a boil and then simmer, covered, over low heat for about 20 minutes.

While the farrow is simmering away, chop your onion and apple and sauté them over medium heat in the other pot in the remaining 2 TBSP butter. Lower the heat to medium-low. Add the chard and garlic and allow the chard to wilt and the garlic to fill your kitchen with a pleasing aroma.

Mix the cooked farrow with the sautéed vegetables and enjoy as-is, or top with the protein of your choice to make a complete meal.
