Nelson Mandela said “Education is the most powerful weapon you can use to change the world,” - in this summer of record fatal and non-fatal drowning events we need to promote swimming and water safety education more than ever.
But what do we mean by education and what do we mean by learning? Many will agree that being able to ‘swim’ may not be ‘enough education’. We need to offer learning outcomes where knowledge and understanding help us to make decisions that will keep us safer in, on and around water.
AUSTSWIM’s Educational Focus in 2017 – Meaningful Learning
AUSTSWIM kicked off the New Year with an active presence at the International ACHPER Conference in Canberra. This was the ideal platform to listen to, influence and interact with leading educationalists. We were able to make connections with people, universities and specialists who challenged our thoughts, actions and outcomes, providing an understanding of why and how we learn so that we may continue to nurture, support and enhance a skilled AUSTSWIM teaching workforce.
AUSTSWIM has some interesting local conference and PD sessions on its schedule for 2017, so be sure to check them out.
It was also pleasing to see that AUSTSWIM’s Learning Pillar Framework gained good traction and acknowledgement of educational alignment with the National Curriculum.
This year our focus on education will feature the:
Purpose of learning during a lesson
Importance of goal setting for teachers and students alike
Outcomes of learning
Journey we travel as individuals on the pathway to achievement
A Current AUSTSWIM Licence – what’s the value?
The AUSTSWIM Teacher Licence is valid for a period of three (3) years from the date of accreditation to the date of expiry. As with a driver’s licence, a lapsed AUSTSWIM licence, CPR or Child Protection Evidence (Working With Children Check) means the accreditation and insurance is invalid until renewed.
AUSTSWIM understands things can slip off the radar and for this reason we grant a three month grace period for payment of licence renewal fee and submission of application. Note: This is not an extension of accreditation. The Licence is expired and the holder deemed unqualified and uninsured until the Licence is renewed. Teaching should not be conducted until the Licence is renewed.
AUSTSWIM also has compliance regulations that must be adhered to, one of which is ensuring all Teachers of Swimming and Water Safety and Aqua Instructors commit to and gain accreditation against a set of standards and provide evidence of:
A minimum of 10 hours of learning over the 3 year licence period
Currency in CPR and Child Protection Evidence
First Aid Certificate (WETS Aqua Instructor only)
Signed Teacher Declaration
Agreement to abide by the AUSTSWIM Code of Conduct
Industry employment – paid or voluntary
So, get ready and prepared for 2017 - check your licence expiry dates and sign up for some additional learning which will contribute to, as Nelson Mandela states - your most powerful weapon.
