Obituary: Jean-Pierre Cometti
It is with sorrow that we inform you that Jean-Pierre Cometti (Marseille 1944) died on Tuesday, January 5, 2016. One of the world’s finest specialist in aesthetics, he was a member of the scientific board of the “Rivista di Estetica”. Jean-Pierre will be missed by his colleagues and friends and by generations of his students.
Here below you can read the message from Michel Valensi.

NEW (1/2017) "Discrimination in Philosophy"
Advisory Editor: Vera Tripodi
mail to: vera.tripodi@unito.it and rivista.estetica@gmail.com
Deadline for submission: May 30th, 2016
Description. As various feminist epistemologists and philosophers of science have argued, our practices of knowledge attribution, acquisition, and justification can systematically disadvantage women and other subordinated groups. Dominant knowledge practices can in fact discriminate some individuals in different ways: by excluding them from inquiry; denying them epistemic authority, denigrating their modes of knowledge; producing theories that portray them as inferior, deviant; producing social theories that make gendered power relations invisible; reinforcing gender bias and social hierarchies. Can we remedy these forms of injustice? What needs to change in our knowledge practices? How can we challenge the narrowness of what is understood as “philosophical knowledge” and how “good knowledge” is evaluated? Should the concept of knowledge be considered in connection with notions such as trust, reliance and testimony? Should we need to re-imagine what “authority”, “credibility” or “testimony” are, and revisit the ways in which we measure quality, ability, credibility and reliability?
This issue of the Rivista di estetica aims to address such and similar questions, exploring (i) how social identity affects the way we operate in social practice and we establish our credibility or come (or fail to come) to exercise authority; and (ii) what we should do in order to promote diversity and pluralism in knowledge.
NEW (3/2017) "The Auditory Object"
Advisory Editors: Elvira Di Bona, Vincenzo Santarcangelo
Mail to: elviradibona@gmail.com, vincenzosantarcangelo@yahoo.it and rivista.estetica@gmail.com
Deadline for submission: December 30th, 2016
Description. The concept of “auditory object” has recently attracted much attention among neuroscientists, neuropsychologists, and philosophers. Although an auditory object is a sense-specific concept, it “raises fundamental questions about the nature of object perception in all sensory systems” (Griffiths and Warren 2004). The auditory object has been investigated in comparison with the visual object. Such analyses revealed not only how ontologically different the two objects are—since, while the visual object is often identified with material objects, the auditory object is equated with streams or events—but also how similar for certain aspects they appear—for the fact that both objects have perceptible qualities (i.e. colour, dimension and size for the visual object, and pitch, loudness and timbre for the auditory object). Within Gestalt Psychology, the auditory object (in gestaltic terms the “perceptive whole”) has been often examined with reference to the musical object—for example, a psychologist like Von Erhenfels (1890) studied auditory objects such as a melody. Nevertheless, it seems that there should be differences between the auditory object and the musical object, since the musical object is characterized by an aesthetic dimension. For instance, a trivial environmental sound like the slamming of a door might become a musical object when inserted in a music composition, as in the piece “Variations pour une porte et un soupir” by Pierre Henry and, in general, as in the music genre of the musique concrète. The objective of this special issue of Rivista di Estetica is to investigate the ontological nature of the auditory object, its specificity as an object of perception and its relation to the visual and the musical object.

June 20-July 1, 2016
Info
The EHESS offers a Summer Program around the topic of The Unity of the Social Sciences through 4 intensive courses. These courses explore crucial questions:
a. How are we to criticize the models of economy which have become so dominant throughout the world? What does it mean to make economics more open to sociology and history?
b. How do the physical and social structure of cities change over time and how can we observe such changes? What is the agency of economic powers, government, social movements of various kinds, and the inhabitants themselves in this process?
c. How have technology, politics, and economics changed the nature of the family and of sexuality itself? What is the future of the family in the face of the radical changes undergone by gender, sexuality and reproduction?
d. How do corporations, the nation-state and culture interlock with global processes and transform the structure of modern lives?

II FINO/SIFA GC in Mind, Language and Science “Between natural, social, and artificial kinds”
Genoa, June 30 - July 1 2016
Deadline: March 30th, 2016
Acceptances will be notified by April 30th, 2016
To say that a science theorizes about kinds that are natural, instead of social or artificial, is to say that they correspond to elements that reflect the real structure of the world, not merely human actions, interests, and values. These topics are among the most debated in contemporary philosophy as they raise many contentious issues, which involve the nature and semantics of concepts such as species, gender, race, disease, and so on, and also have pivotal implications both for ethics and the various sciences.
Topics of interest include bur are not limited to:
The metaphysics of natural, social, and artificial kinds; The epistemology of natural, social, and artificial kinds; The semantics of natural, social, and artificial kind terms; Taxonomies in the special sciences (chemistry, biology, medicine, psychology, social sciences, etc.); Alleged natural kind concepts (species, gender, race, disease, concept, emotion, etc.)
Keynote speakers: Robin Andreasen (University of Delaware, USA); John Dupré (University of Exeter, UK); David Papineau (King’s College, London, UK).
Scientific Committee: Cristina Amoretti, Marcello Frixione, Michele Marsonet, Carlo Penco, Nicla Vassallo, Massimiliano Vignolo
Organizing Comittee: Deborah Conti, Fabio Patrone
Abstracts of about 6,000 characters (roughly 1000 words) are invited on the topics of natural, social, and artificial kinds broadly understood. The abstracts, prepared for blind refereeing, should be submitted electronically using the EasyChair submission page at: https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=finosifa16
