Ontology of Art

Analytic Aesthetics and Contemporary Art

Editors-in-Chief: Tiziana Andina and David Carrier. Published by Bloomsbury Academic

Philosophers and cultural historians typically discuss works of art in abstract terms. But the true significance of art for philosophy, and philosophy for art, can only be established through close analysis of specific examples. Art is increasingly being used to introduce and discuss problems in philosophy. And many works of art raise important philosophical issues of their own. But the resources available have been limited. Analytic Aesthetics and Contemporary Art, the first series of its kind, will provide a productive context for that indispensable enterprise. The series, upcoming in 2017, promotes philosophy as a framework for understanding the study of contemporary arts and artists, showcasing researches that exemplifies cutting-edge and socially engaged scholarship, bridging theory and practice, academic rigor and insight of the contemporary world.

ARDETH. A magazine on the power of the project

 Published by Rosenberg & Sellier

“Ardeth – Architectural Design Theory – is a new magazine dedicated to the power of the project of architecture. Whereas most magazines in the architectural field address outcomes (i.e. architectures) or authors (i.e. architects), Ardeth chooses instead to address their work: the project. Ardeth explores the falsifiability of design hypotheses through a shift from subjects and their good intentions, as taught in Universities and reclaimed in the profession, to objects as the products of design, at work within the social system that contains them.”

Documedialité al Collège d’études mondiales, Parigi

Documedialité. Nouvelles formes d’archivation et de classification de la production en SHS

Le projet Documedialité entre dans sa deuxième année.

Description.

Which biodiversity definition for biodiversity conservation?
R&D Project. Ref. PTDC/IVC-HFC/1817/2014

BIODECON enters its second year.

Since 2016, LabOnt is a partner of Biodecon, a R&D project based headed by Elena Casetta at the Center for Philosophy of Science of the University of Lisbon.

Description. Although the biodiversity crisis has risen up the policy agenda more than twenty years ago, there is still no agreement on a definition of “biodiversity”: no less than 85 definitions have been counted in the relevant literature. More generally, different understandings of the term “biodiversity”—in particular, the scientific and the commonsensical one — pose a threat to biodiversity conservation for at least two reasons. On the one hand, effective conservation policies need the engagement of several actors, including scientists, decision makers, governments, jurists, policy makers, land users, as well as the general public; and the biodiversity crisis cannot be handled without the effective communication and cooperation among them. On the other hand, if biodiversity is defined in fundamentally different ways, agreement on strategies for biodiversity conservation may be gravely impaired. “BIODECON—Which biodiversity definition for biodiversity conservation?” has two aims: to put forward the formal and material constraints that a definition of biodiversity should satisfy in order to be effective in conservation actions; and to relate these constraints with conservation policies, by taking into account both the scientific and societal challenges implied in conserving biodiversity.

PIC M.A. Philosophy Curriculum in Turin

Tiziana Andina. "Philosophy of Art"

Drawing on the philosophies of art developed by the continental authors and studies of Anglo-American philosophers, the course presents a panorama of the philosophy of art. It discusses definitions offered from the analytical school including Danto's representationalism, Dipert's theories of artefactualism, Dickie's institutional and procedural theories and Levinson's historical and cultural theories. From the continental theories it reflects on Hegel's notion of philosophy of art, Heidegger and Gadamer's hermeneutic tradition and Alexius Meinong's theory of objects.

Graham Harman. "Metaphysics: Three Hidden Keys to the History of Philosophy"

The course will be a brief but intense examination of three key concepts that are not normally discussed in courses on Western metaphysics, but which I will present as being central to the discipline: duomining, indirect causation, and the continuum. The readings will be intellectually challenging, though not overwhelming in terms of length.

Singularity, Generality and Exemplarity in Legal Discourse

McCormick 101, Princeton University Art Museum, New York
May, 25th-28th

18th International Roundtable for the Semiotics of Law (IRSL 2017, hosted by the Cardozo Law School  in collaboration with the University of Roma Tre – Law School)

The use and practice of exemplarity are rooted in classic rhetoric, literature, politics and law. Because of the shift from pre-modern to modern ways of thinking – as modern knowledge came to privilege abstraction over exempla, the general over the singular and particular – exemplarity lost its way.

The aim of this Roundtable is to discuss how in the contemporary legal discourse exemplarity regained relevance in human and legal thought: it constitutes the “compromise” between different orders: positive law (civil law, common law) and natural law, general and particular, abstract and concrete, societal and individual. Exemplary judgments (at a national and at an international level, e.g. Landgericht Köln – N. 151 Ns 169/11; Enel v. Costa; Scordino v. Italy) bridge the divide between traditional dichotomies, such as Common Law/Civil Law and positive law/natural law — by linking the ordinary (cases that are already described by a norm, which provides for them) and the extreme (cases that challenge the normative order because they are not yet provided for by law).

International Conference: I work, therefore I am (European)
Jean Monnet, Erasmus + Projects

Bruxelles,, 9th-11th November,

Direction: Maurizio Ferraris
Conception & Coordination: Angela Condello, Tiziano Toracca
Partners & consultants: Piervirgilio Dastoli (Movimento Europeo), Luigi Moccia (University of Roma Tre), Filip Dorsemmont (UC Louvain), Monica Jansen (Utrecht University), Massimiliano Tortora (University of Torino)

In contemporary Europe, labour occupies a central position in human existence: it is the principal criterion of reciprocal recognition and of universal mobilization. In a multi-level governance system like the EU, through their profession people feel recognized by the others: they are. Labour is more than a mere economic relationship: it is an identitarian process. How does social identity interact with European identity?
By bringing together academics, stakeholders, politicians and intellectuals from different European countries around the topic of labour considered from both a juridical-political and a humanistic perspective, we are proud to announce the international conference – “I work, therefore I am (European)”, which will take place in Bruxelles, in November, 9th-11th.

Human Emancipation and the Problem of Violence

International Association for Critical Realism 2017 Annual Conference
The 20th IACR Annual Conference
July 17-21, 2017, University of Turin, ITALY

How do we understand human emancipation and the problem of violence in modern societies today? Violence as a philosophical problem of the modern age, has to be understood in terms of the public and institutional act of legitimating, justifying or ennobling its use in line with modern cultural or political programs. In this scenario, the social sciences are in danger of becoming a sounding board for dominant ideological thought, their task to clothe the narratives of the power elite with a pseudo-scientific aura. In its original and dialectical forms, and with its later discovery of metaReality; with its understanding of human emancipation, human history, ideology, and the relationship between human science and natural order, Critical Realism offers a variety of entry points able to resist this danger.
