Emergence à l'EHESS
Maurizio Ferraris, « Emergence », 30 Mai 2016 14h-16h

LabOnt Seminar: Ferraris, Forte, Barbero, Wallace

31 maggio, ore 15-17, Maurizio Ferraris (Labont, Università di Torino), Pierpaolo Forte (Unisannio), Carola Barbero (Labont, Università di Torino) – “Oggetti giuridici e oggetti filosofici”. Sede: Campus Luigi Einaudi (aula h4-settore D4 secondo piano).

31 maggio, ore 17-19, Robert Wallace (Northwestern University), “How Plato and Hegel Reconcile Science and Religion”. Sede: Campus Luigi Einaudi (aula h4-settore D4 secondo piano).

Abstract: This talk outlines how Plato and Hegel reconcile science in the modern sense of the word with the essence of religion, by showing that science and religion are each of them necessary aspects of what deserves to be called the ultimate reality. Science and religion both seek to “ascend” above one’s initial opinions, appetites, and emotions, to something that’s truer and better than those initial opinions, appetites, and emotions. By “ascending” in this way, we make ourselves more able to govern ourselves, rather than being governed by whatever external forces caused us to have our initial opinions, appetites, and emotions. Insofar as we govern ourselves, in this way, we become more “real,” as ourselves, than we would otherwise be. Since this new kind of reality is self-governing, it’s real as itself, and not merely as the product of its circumstances, and it’s “ultimate,” because nothing could be more real than what by governing itself makes itself what it is. I will explain how our participation in this reality has the features that religion describes as “transcendence,” “conversion,” “grace,” and “salvation,” and how Hegel details this participation through his accounts of nature, spirit, art, religion, and philosophy.

Turning Points. Critical Legal Conference 2016, Kent Law School 1–3 September 2016
Deadline: 1 July 2016
Webpage

The present is notoriously difficult to diagnose. Are we living at a decisive turning point for global and European history, politics and law? Are we witnesses to a new epoch? Or perhaps we just have a bad case of “presentism”? The Critical Legal Conference 2016 will open a forum for critical reflection on precarious political situations, particularly that of Europe in a global context - an apposite theme for a critical conference at the University of Kent, ‘the UK’s European University’ and a point of origin for the CLC.
