Highlights

Incontro con l'autore. Tiziana Andina presenta Ontologia sociale. Transgenerazionalità, potere, giustizia, Carocci, 2016
Torino, 9 novembre, ore 18.00
Circolo dei Lettori (Sala Musica), via Bogino 9

Insieme all'autrice intervengono Francesca De Vecchi (Università Vita-Salute San Raffaele), Sebastiano Maffettone (LUISS – Università Guido Carli), Ugo Mattei (Università di Torino; Hastings College of the Law, University of California), Davide Pala (Università di Torino).

'Postmodernisme is veranderd in populisme'
Interview filosoof Maurizio Ferraris

Magia? Suggestione? Semplicemente un’opera d’arte: The Clock.

News on Mobilitazione Totale

Le téléphone portable "a militarisé nos vies"
Par Sophie Carquain
www.madame.lefigaro.fr - 30 octobre 2016

Call for Papers: Linguistic Justice and Analytic Philosophy. Special issue of _Philosophical Papers

*Guest editors*: Filippo Contesi (Jean Nicod Institute), Moti Mizrahi (Florida Tech), Enrico Terrone (Turin)

Expected contributors include *Elisabetta Galeotti* (Eastern Piedmont) & Francesco Chiesa (Pavia), *Eric Schliesser* (Amsterdam) and *Eric Schwitzgebel* (University of California, Riverside)

The topics of linguistic discrimination and linguistic justice have received little attention from contemporary analytic philosophers despite the fact that there is a growing body of evidence in linguistics and social psychology about implicit negative biases towards speakers and writers perceived as non-native. In fact, issues of linguistic discrimination and justice are particularly urgent in analytic philosophy because English is undoubtedly the lingua franca of contemporary analytic philosophy. For this reason, it is important to think about what it means to be a person for whom English is not a first language and who tries to participate in the academic life of contemporary analytic philosophy.

The aim of this special issue of _Philosophical Papers_ is to consider the circumstances of being a non-native speaker and writer of English in analytic philosophy. In addition to philosophical and meta-philosophical perspectives, we also encourage submissions from different approaches and disciplines, including psychology, linguistics and the social sciences.

Possible questions for discussion include:

- Is there linguistic discrimination or injustice in analytic philosophy? If so, what should we do about it?

- Are the percentages of non-native-speaker faculty members of the most reputable analytic philosophy departments comparable to those in arts and humanities and STEM departments? What should any differences teach us?

- How can diversity of native languages and cultures be beneficial, if at all, to analytic philosophy?

- Are perceived linguistic fluency and eloquence important factors in philosophical writing and presenting? Should they be?

- Is it true, as is sometimes claimed, that publishing philosophical work in the most reputable venues in contemporary analytic philosophy only requires linguistic competence of a level that is reasonably easy for a non-native writer to achieve?

- Should English (or any other language) be the lingua franca of contemporary analytic philosophy?

- Should study and research in analytic philosophy be a global and cosmopolitan enterprise?

- What if any extra policies can or should professional journals or institutions adopt to address any specific difficulties faced by non-native speakers and writers?

- Are there any precedents in the history of intellectual communities, including contemporary ones and those in different philosophical traditions, that can provide a useful model of how to approach the language issue in analytic philosophy?

- How does the language issue intersect with issues of race, ethnicity or nationality (or other issues)? How important are such intersections (or lack thereof)?

The deadline for receipt of submissions is **1 October, 2017**. This issue of _Philosophical Papers_, comprising both invited and submitted articles, will appear in *March 2018*.

Authors should submit manuscripts electronically, as a PDF or MS Word document attachment, to the Managing Editor at Philosophical.Papers@ru.ac.za. Authors must include their full name, affiliation, and address for email correspondence with their submission.

Further inquiries may be addressed to Filippo Contesi (filippo.contesi@york.ac.uk) or Ward Jones (w.jones@ru.ac.za).

COSTELLAZIONI
Website
Costellazioni, Anno II, n. 4, Realism in the arts (and beyond)
Deadline for submission: December 31, 2016

In recent years, an overt turn back towards the domain of the real has occurred in the arts, with efforts in this direction being witnessed in the visual arts, in music, and in literature alike. In parallel, the status of reality within our linguistic, emotive, and cognitive practices continues to provoke a heated debate among philosophers.
Instead of such answers as might be supplied by rigid philosophical paradigms, it seems to us that the debate over the status of reality demands an open dialogue and the contribution of diverse modes of enquiry and reflection. Focussing primarily on realism in the arts (ranging from the visual arts to cinema, music, literature, etc.), we wish to approach the issue of realism from the angle of aesthetics and of the theories and criticism of art and literature, as well as in the light of the mutual contributions of philosophy and the sciences (which recently appear to have taken a new turn, as in the instance of the non-restrictive paradigm of cognitive processes with which neuroscience is currently engaged).
Contributions on the following topics are thus especially welcomed:
  1. The theoretical, philosophical, and scientific status of realism;
  2. Transformations in the notion of realism in the wake of the demise of strong ideologies and of the crisis of postmodernity;
  3. The real as experienced in the new media and in multimedia practices;
  4. The notion of mimesis in the light of emerging trends in the representation of reality;
  5. Realism as historical and political documentation, and as ethical or political claim;
  6. Developments in the arts arising from the need to narrate contemporary reality, and as reformulation of traditional artistic modes (as in the graphic novel, in street art, etc.)
Please send abstracts for proposals to rivistacostellazioni@gmail.com by December 31st 2016.

2nd World Congress on Logic and Religion. University of Warsaw, June 18-22, 2017

The 2nd World Congress on Logic and Religion will be held at the University of Warsaw (Poland) on June 18-22, 2017, the institutional organiser being the Institute of Philosophy of the University of Warsaw (Instytut Filozofii, Uniwersytet Warszawski) (see the map).

The 1st World Congress on Logic and Religion was organized jointly by the Federal University of Campina Grande, the Federal University of Paraiba and the University of Brazil in João Pessoa, and held on April 1-5, 2015. It was devoted to a wide range of problems concerning the relations between logic and religion. At the conclusion of the congress, many participants expressed the wish to continue discussions on these topics in the future and also warmly welcomed the idea to organize such an event in Poland, which can be called a country of logic and religion thanks to both the tradition of Lvov-Warsaw School of logic and a considerable level of religiosity.

There are a number of important topics that are proposed be discussed at the 2nd World Congress on Logic and Religion in Warsaw, which include such fields as:

  • Impact of religious beliefs on logical structures;
  • Logic at the service of apologetics;
  • Rationalization of religious beliefs;
  • Justification in religious legal traditions (including Talmudic Logic);
  • Logics vis-a-vis illogicalities in religion;
  • Non-classical logics and religion;
  • Models of argumentation in religious discourse, etc.

It is our pleasure to invite you to join us in Warsaw.

The deadline for submission of an abstract is January 15, 2017.
In order to send your submission please go to the registration form.
