Highlights

The Theory and Practice of Ontology
Zaibert, Leo (Ed.)

This book provides close examination of ontology and the work of Professor Barry Smith, one of the most prolific philosophers of the modern day. In this book numerous scholars who have collaborated with Smith explore the various disciplines in which the impact of his work has been felt over the breadth of his career, including biology, computer science and informatics, cognitive science, economics, genetics, geography, law, neurology, and philosophy itself. While offering in-depth perspectives on ontology, the book also expands upon the breadth of Smith’s influence. With insights from renowned and influential scholars from many different countries, this book is an informative and enlightening celebration of all Smith has contributed to numerous academic schools of thought.

Genova, 6 giugno

Dipartimento di filosofia, Università di Genova, 16.00 - 18.00
Elena Casetta & Davide VecchiChe cos’è H. sapiens?
EPILOG seminar Generi naturali, sociali, artificiali (coord. Cristina Amoretti e Marcello Frixione).
Abstract. We address two questions: What makes H. sapiens what it is? What sort of entity is H. sapiens? We first sketch the traits of a “minimal consensus” among biologists on the features displayed by all sexual species—to which H. sapiens belongs. Our working hypothesis is that it is the peculiar evolutionary history of the species at issue, its peculiar metapopulation structure and the peculiar mixture and strength of homeostatic processes that can provide an answer to the two questions. We then reconstruct the history of our species and identify the putative evolutionary processes that render it cohesive.

LabOnt Seminar: Babette Babich
Torino, 7 giugno

Circolo dei Lettori (Sala Musica), via Bogino 9, ore 17-19
Babette Babich (Humboldt Universität Berlin and Fordham University, NYC), “Nietzsche and Raphael: On the Artist’s Aesthetics”.
Abstract. I raise the question of  Nietzsche’s artist’s aesthetics, that is: as Nietzsche sought pose the question of art from the point of view of the creator, as opposed, as is common in aesthetics, the science as he spoke of it, of aesthetics, “aesthetische Wissenschaft,” (BT §1), from he named a spectator’s aesthetics.  This is an aesthetics of composition but it is also a genealogical aesthetics and thereby, phenomenologically an aesthetics of constitution. Nietzsche invokes Goethe as well as Raphael to illustrate this artist’s aesthetics and in what follows it is useful to offer a philosophical reading or critique of art criticism, comparing two art critics on the art of Raphael, one English, one Italian, quite as a practical, lab-ontological approach to illuminate Nietzsche’s perspective on Raphael as artist and on what he calls his artist’s aesthetics.  This involves what Nietzsche names a 'masculine’ as opposed to a 'feminine’ aesthetics.  And yet the artist for Nietzsche is always a broad category including the poet and especially the lyric poet (and this is where an excursus on Archilochus is essential for Nietzsche precisely qua coordinate with Homer), the tragedian, the musician, and all of this for the sake of culture, as Nietzsche writes in The Gay Science, regarding what we have to learn just in order to be "the poets of our lives, beginning with the smallest and most quotidan" [wir aber wollen die Dichter unseres Lebens sein, und im Kleinsten und Alltäglichsten zuerst].

Summer School

Application Deadline: Monday, June 20th 2016 International Summer School at the Centre for Conservation and Restoration "La Venaria Reale", September 12th – 18th 2016
One week to explore and discuss with professors and experts on a very topical issue: the Restoration and Conservation of Contemporary Art.

Press release

The works of Joseph Beuys, made with the use of organic material, degrade in time; Pier Paolo Calzolari instead uses stabilized natural materials. The works of Anselm and Wolfgang Laib require daily maintenance; the complex installations by Dieter Roth can only be reactivated by his son, Ernesto Neto, to whom he hands the work with instructions to install it.
Works of this type open up important questions:

Which and how many variations can a work of art bear while still being the same?

What are the margins of the owner’s intervention in terms of exhibition and conservation of the work?

What role does the restorer play today?

Contemporary works of art imply a number of challenges both on the side of philosophy, for problems that concern their identity, and on the legal side, as regards their protection. There are many contemporary materials, in addition to the more traditional ones: lights, smells, sounds, food, consumables and waste, to name just a few. All of them ask important questions in terms of preventive conservation and restoration.

The summer school will examine the theoretical and practical issues raised by the contemporary arts in the context of law, philosophy and restoration.

The examination of theoretical issues will take place by exploring the many case studies produced by the arts, and will unfold in dialogue with the artists and the industry. The theoretical work also provides a basis for the consideration of the structural characteristics and dynamics that characterize the contemporary art world.

NEW Grounding Grounding. Alghero (Italy) 28-29 October 2016
University of Sassari
Deadline to submit: September 1st
Invited Speakers:
Chris Daly, Dan Lopez De Sa, Benjamin Schnieder, Alexander Skiles, Naomi Thompson.
Description

According to the advocates of grounding, the central concern of metaphysics amounts to saying what grounds what. The notion of grounding is in fact claimed to be the key to understanding certain important metaphysical issues such as the realism/anti-realism debate in various domains, the nature and varieties of metaphysical dependence and the problem of reconciling a sparse inventory of fundamental entities with the rich ontological commitments of the special sciences. The conference aims to focus on a clear-cut difference between two groups of scholars: the difference between realist and antirealist conceptions of grounding. In fact, realists and antirealists have opposite views about the fundamental question concerning what grounds grounding itself. While realists believe that grounding explanations track a metaphysical structure of reality that exists out there, waiting to be discovered, according to antirealists grounding explanations at most reveal the layered structure of the way we represent reality—of our concepts and explanatory and linguistic practices.

Therefore we invite submissions of abstracts aiming at shedding light on the question: What grounds grounding? Topics of interests are:

-       Grounding and essence

-       Grounding and modality

-       Grounding and conceptual explanations

-       Grounding and scientific explanations

-       Grounding and other metaphysical relations such as substance-accident, part-whole, constituency, supervenience

-       Grounding, mental representations and language

-       Grounding and the realism/antirealism debate in various domains.

Deadline: 1 July 2016

The present is notoriously difficult to diagnose. Are we living at a decisive turning point for global and European history, politics and law? Are we witnesses to a new epoch? Or perhaps we just have a bad case of “presentism”? The Critical Legal Conference 2016 will open a forum for critical reflection on precarious political situations, particularly that of Europe in a global context - an apposite theme for a critical conference at the University of Kent, ‘the UK’s European University’ and a point of origin for the CLC.
