Philosophisches Seminar. Prof. Dr. Maurizio Ferraris (University of Turin), Trascendental Realismus
Heidelberg, 31. Januar
Schulgasse 6, 18 Uhr

Präsentation von „Nietzsches Gespenster“, von und mit Maurizio Ferraris (Turin) und Andreas Kemmerling (Heidelberg)
Bonn, 1 Februar
Max Weber Lecture Room, Käte Hamburger Center for Advanced Study in the Humanities “Law as Culture”, 18 Uhr

The Question of Spectacle: Rousseau, Nietzsche and Michael Fried

Tracy B. Strong, University of Southampton, UK / UCSD Distinguished Professor, emeritus

Torino, 9 febbraio

[ For there is no place / which does not see you. You have to change your life.]”
(Rilke)

Michael Fried’s early and seminal essay, “Art and Objecthood” is built around a set of assertions about the phenomenology of the experience of art.  He also refers to himself as a “Diderotian” critic and in a later book on Diderot engages in a brief discussion of Rousseau on this question.  From an analysis of Diderot, Rousseau’s Lettre à M. d\Alembert sur les spectacles and Nietzsche’s The Birth of Tragedy,  I argue that his criticism in fact rather shows deep resemblances to the second two thinkers but that their analyses go deeper than does Fried and raise a question he avoids or overlooks about the relation of aesthetics to the political.

CPT Colloqium. Christian Wüthrich (Geneva) | When the Actual World is Not Even Possible
Milano, 10 febbraio
Sala Enzo Paci, Via Festa del Perdono 7, h. 15:00-17:00

Abstract: Approaches to quantum gravity often involve the disappearance of space and time at the fundamental level. The metaphysical consequences of this disappearance are profound, as is illustrated with David Lewis’s analysis of modality. As Lewis’s possible worlds are unified by the spatiotemporal relations among their parts, the non-fundamentality of spacetime – if borne out – suggests a serious problem for his analysis: his pluriverse, for all its ontological abundance, does not contain our world. Although the mere existence – as opposed to the fundamentality – of spacetime must be recovered from the fundamental structure in order to guarantee the empirical coherence of the non-spatiotemporal fundamental theory, it does not suffice to salvage Lewis’s theory of modality from the charge of rendering our actual world impossible.

News on New Realism and Documentality

THE REINFORCED ENTERPRISE BUSINESS ARCHITECTURE (REBAR) ONTOLOGY
Christine A. Hoyland
The philosophical ontology regarding documentality probes ways in which social reality is created and used. The thesis regarding documentality finds that words not only convey information, they bring new types of social entities into being. For example, there is no physical manifestation of a debt. It is only after two or more specific humans make a promise that the entity of debt can exist. Left unwritten, that debt relies on human memory for its existence. Documents evolved through time have provided humans a way to make up for short or inconsistent memory, since a document is something that is able to endure self-identically through time. Ferraris extended the documentality concept as he described how social objects come into existence...

PIC M.A. Philosophy Curriculum in Turin

Tiziana Andina. "Philosophy of Art"
Drawing on the philosophies of art developed by the continental authors and studies of Anglo-American philosophers, the course presents a panorama of the philosophy of art. It discusses definitions offered from the analytical school including Danto's representationalism, Dipert's theories of artefactualism, Dickie's institutional and procedural theories and Levinson's historical and cultural theories. From the continental theories it reflects on Hegel's notion of philosophy of art, Heidegger and Gadamer's hermeneutic tradition and Alexius Meinong's theory of objects.

Graham Harman. "Metaphysics: Three Hidden Keys to the History of Philosophy"
The course will be a brief but intense examination of three key concepts that are not normally discussed in courses on Western metaphysics, but which I will present as being central to the discipline: duomining, indirect causation, and the continuum. The readings will be intellectually challenging, though not overwhelming in terms of length.

Considerations in Urban Aesthetics: Planning, Mobilities, and Everyday Life
Deadline: 31st January 2017

The International Institute of Applied Aesthetics’ (IIAA) XIIth IIAA Summer Conference on Environmental Aesthetics, will be organized in both Lahti and Espoo, Finland. The conference will begin in Lahti on 31.5.–1.6.2017, and conclude at Aalto University in Helsinki, on 2.6.2017. The theme of the conference is “Considerations in Urban Aesthetics: Planning, Mobilities, and Everyday Life.“ Aesthetic considerations constitute one of the important aspects of urban experience, with aesthetics likewise playing a major role within urban planning. Our routes of commuting, for example, span across different units of the environment and include a variety of aesthetic experiences: an apartment, a building, the neighborhood block, the city district, the whole city. These different zones affect habituation processes and function as a setting with which we engage and disengage within the fluctuating spatio-temporal rhythms of the everyday. It is paradoxical, therefore, that even though the relevance of aesthetic considerations both in planning processes and in the experience of built environments is undeniable, the nature of the aesthetic and aesthetic experience is only seldom, if ever, analyzed explicitly in regards to Urban Planning. However, these issues concerning the urban environment are so complicated and multifaceted that an interdisciplinary approach may be needed to grasp them. Can we bring together expertise in philosophical aesthetics, architectural theory, and planning theory to develop the conceptual tools needed to better understand the relevance and role of aesthetic values both in the complicated planning processes of urban environments and in the everyday lives of urban citizens? What, for instance, is:
• the role of aesthetics in the confrontation between consensus-based and pluralism-based theories of urban planning?
• the aesthetic preconditions of achieving a consensus?
• the aesthetic assumptions both in planning processes and in people’s judgments of the results of proposed plans?

To discuss these and related themes, we enthusiastically invite researchers interested in exploring the topic to
send an abstract of 400 words to iiaa-info@helsinki.fi by the 31st of January 2017. The time allotted to each
paper is 40 minutes (30 minute presentation, 10 minutes for discussion).

Special Issue - Philosophy and Geography: History and Theory
The Journal of Interdisciplinary History of Ideas launches a call for papers on the historical connections between philosophy and geography
Deadline: May 15, 2017

Man’s geographic position is one of the most fascinating topic of the entire history of philosophy from its very beginning. For instance Anaximander was the first, at least in the Western World, who drew a map of the known world. And Thales had already conceived the Earth as a body floating in waters, implicitly defining a radical dichotomy between land and sea, establishing for the first time one of the most important categories of political and legal philosophy developed in the 20th century primarily by Carl Schmitt. The aim of this issue of the Journal of Interdisciplinary History of Ideas is to answer the many relevant questions concerning the historical connections between philosophy and geography, exploring the possible theoretical intersections between them to which this history points.
More:  Website

The special issue of the Journal of Interdisciplinary History of Ideas on Philosophy and Geography is planned for the end of 2017. Deadlines: Articles, along with a 300-words abstract and keywords, must be submitted before May 15, 2017.

Submission: Submissions must contain original and unpublished work. Contributions are expected to adopt a genuinely interdisciplinary perspective in the history of ideas. Submitted articles may be written in English or French, and shall be sent to the following e-mail address: phil_geo@jihi.eu

All submitted articles will undergo a double-blind review process. The text can be provided in .odt, .doc, .docx, or .pdf format, and must not include authors’ names and affiliations (pay attention to metadata and file properties), nor self-references that reveal the author’s identity.
Contacts: For further information, please contact the editors of the special issue:

Authors are welcome to discuss their prospective contributions with the editors before submission.

Call for Papers: Linguistic Justice and Analytic Philosophy
Special issue of _Philosophical Papers_
Deadline: 1 October, 2017
Website

*Guest editors*: Filippo Contesi (Jean Nicod Institute), Moti Mizrahi (Florida Tech) and Enrico Terrone (Turin)
Expected contributors include *Eric Schwitzgebel* (University of California, Riverside), *Hans-Johann Glock* (Zurich), *Elisabetta Galeotti* (Eastern Piedmont) and *Eric Schliesser* (Amsterdam)

The topics of linguistic discrimination and linguistic justice have received little attention from contemporary analytic philosophers despite the fact that there is a growing body of evidence in linguistics and social psychology about implicit negative biases towards speakers and writers perceived as non-native. In fact, issues of linguistic discrimination and justice are particularly urgent in analytic philosophy because English is undoubtedly the lingua franca of contemporary analytic philosophy. For this reason, it is important to think about what it means to be a person for whom English is not a first language and who tries to participate in the academic life of contemporary analytic philosophy.

The aim of this special issue of _Philosophical Papers_ is to consider the circumstances of being a non-native speaker and writer of English in analytic philosophy. In addition to philosophical and meta-philosophical perspectives, we also encourage submissions from different approaches and disciplines, including psychology, linguistics and the social sciences.

Possible questions for discussion include:

- Is there linguistic discrimination or injustice in analytic philosophy? If so, what should we do about it?
- Are the percentages of non-native-speaker faculty members of the most reputable analytic philosophy departments comparable to those in arts and humanities and STEM departments? What should any differences teach us?
- How can diversity of native languages and cultures be beneficial, if at all, to analytic philosophy?
- Are perceived linguistic fluency and eloquence important factors in philosophical writing and presenting? Should they be?
- Is it true, as is sometimes claimed, that publishing philosophical work in the most reputable venues in contemporary analytic philosophy only requires linguistic competence of a level that is reasonably easy for a non-native writer to achieve?
- Should English (or any other language) be the lingua franca of contemporary analytic philosophy?
- Should study and research in analytic philosophy be a global and cosmopolitan enterprise?
- What if any extra policies can or should professional journals or institutions adopt to address any specific difficulties faced by non-native speakers and writers?
- Are there any precedents in the history of intellectual communities, including contemporary ones and those in different philosophical traditions, that can provide a useful model of how to approach the language issue in analytic philosophy?
- How does the language issue intersect with issues of race, ethnicity or nationality (or other issues)? How important are such intersections (or lack thereof)?

The deadline for receipt of submissions is 1 October, 2017. This issue of _Philosophical Papers_, comprising both invited and submitted articles, will appear in *March 2018*.

Authors should submit manuscripts electronically, as a PDF or MS Word document attachment, to the Managing Editor at Philosophical.Papers@ru.ac.za. Authors must include their full name, affiliation, and address for email correspondence with their submission.

Further inquiries may be addressed to Filippo Contesi (filippo.contesi@york.ac.uk) or Ward Jones (w.jones@ru.ac.za).
