ArtOpps and News 13 January 2021
A belated happy and hopeful new year

We're almost 2 weeks into 2021! Whilst we don't often lend significance to the digits in years, this one feels like it warrants an exception. That said, for whatever reason, all the turmoil from 2020 didn't magically disappear when our clocks struck midnight on New Year's Eve. Still, a new year brings renewed hope, and our hope is that we can do our part to get you through this next hurdle.

With lockdowns preventing art venues from opening, we're refocusing our resources on ArtOpps and Online Events. If you're an arts professional, stay tuned for even more artist opportunities to apply to, with chances to earn your next paycheck or find your next client aplenty. For those who are missing having art events in their lives, more and more cultural producers are adding share-worthy events to our Online Events extension. If you haven't recently, do yourself the favour and see what upcoming art events are happening through your internet device. You might just find your next favourite artwork, or discover a creative workshop that adds something to your life.

Online Events of the Week

Stay home and see art with our online event picks this week.

Cross-dimensional digital arts collective Keiken will be discussing their collaborative creative process, their co-working set-up, the practicalities of applying for funding and more as a part of the 2021 programme of the London Short Film Festival.

On January 14, attend Come a Little Closer by 18th Street Arts Centre for an evening of performance artworks where artists explore the concept of online witnessing, questioning what it means to be present with the realities of others through the screen.

View an online screening of Aoibheann Greenan's Dingbox, from Goldsmiths Artists Moving Image, exploring the gesture of the reveal, a tactic increasingly employed by online advertisers to harness attention and extract profit.

See Fiction of a Non-Entry, a video exhibition by Mischa Leinkauf from Signs and Symbols, where the artist crosses the invisible borders on the ocean floor between Israel and Jordan or Egypt in the Red Sea and the Spanish enclave of Ceuta and Morocco in the Strait of Gibraltar.

Practical advice for new artists

If you're looking for ways to help launch or maintain a career as an artist but not sure where to start, we wrote an entire chapter filled with practical advice for our 2019 Art Freshers. Even though that was a lifetime ago, most of it is still useful. Find out where to find art jobs, best ways to create an online portfolio, pricing suggestions and even get access to a downloadable inventory template.
