Shape Austin’s transportation future with the Austin Strategic Mobility Plan!

Presentations about draft policies and draft maps for the Austin Strategic Mobility Plan (ASMP) are now available for review online. Community members can share feedback on both the draft policies and maps through Dec. 21.

The first presentation, released on Oct. 2, introduces the draft policies from the ASMP. These draft policies outline critical transportation priorities and will guide how we make decisions that impact Austin's transportation future.

The second presentation includes draft maps of Austin’s transportation vision for the next 20+ years. These draft maps include both current and potential mobility projects and show how the draft ASMP policies will shape our transportation network.

Both presentations have been designed to collect community feedback. At the end of the draft policies presentation, readers can take a survey to share input. The draft maps allow reviewers the ability to zoom into any street in Austin and comment on individual mobility projects. Feedback collected on these drafts will help shape the ASMP and ensure that the Plan best meets Austin’s transportation needs.

Multimodal improvements coming to West Fifth Street

The project encompasses West Fifth Street between West Lynn and Baylor Streets.
In order to reduce delay on bus routes entering Central Austin from MoPac Expressway, Austin Transportation is working with Capital Metro to install transit improvements on West Fifth Street. These include a shared transit and bicycle priority lane between West Lynn and Baylor streets, with priority bus and bicycle signals at Baylor Street.

By repurposing the existing far right-hand bicycle lane to a shared transit and bicycle priority lane, the City of Austin will achieve greater system efficiency and support multimodal transportation choices without reducing capacity on the remaining three vehicle lanes.

“In the Austin Strategic Direction 2023, Austin City Council directed us to improve access to and equity of multimodal options, such as driving, walking, biking and taking transit,” said Robert Spillar, P.E., Austin Transportation Department Director. “We’re launching our effort to achieve this goal by partnering with Capital Metro to more efficiently move people through this critical segment of West Fifth Street."

"Our partnerships are essential to providing the people of Austin and Central Texas with real transportation options,” said Capital Metro President & CEO Randy Clarke. “This project demonstrates Capital Metro and the City of Austin’s commitment to making effective and reliable transit an important part of our transportation network.”

Austin Transportation will carry out the project in two phases. Crews will kick off construction of the first phase this week and staff anticipates completing it in January 2019, dependent on weather and other factors.

City launches Longhorn Dam bridge virtual open house to gather more public input

The City of Austin has launched a virtual open house to obtain more input on a preliminary study for construction of a new pedestrian and bicycle bridge crossing Lady Bird Lake near Longhorn Dam and interim improvement priorities. The virtual open house mirrors the public meeting the City held at Fiesta Gardens on Nov. 13 and is an opportunity for those who could not attend the meeting to provide feedback.

The virtual open house is available in both English and Spanish through Dec. 16, 2018. Staff is asking for feedback on what the new crossing should accomplish and what potential interim improvements could be made to Longhorn Dam. Material from all of the meetings and contact information are available at AustinTexas.gov/LonghornBridge.

Staff plans to present alternatives for the final design of the bridge at the second meeting in spring 2019, followed by a final recommendation at the third meeting in fall 2019. To receive updates, please sign up for our mailing list.
