Coordinator's Corner

Sarah Poe,
Director of Volunteer Services

Hospice is about living, not dying. It’s about living life to the fullest and focusing on what matters most with the time you have left. Heart ‘n Home Volunteers make that happen in so many ways for our patients and their families. When other people would be afraid to approach someone with a terminal illness, our Volunteers walk forward and make friends. Volunteers know that patients are not their illness; they are people with feelings, families, histories, and futures. None of us know how much time we have in the world and one thing we learn as we become older and certainly what we learn from hospice patients is that life is about the here and now. We learn to focus on everyday pleasures and the people closest to us. Research shows that younger people, who have the perspective that they’ll live for a long time, tend to focus on building relationships that can give them more information and resources for the future. But when young people encounter situations that give them a new perspective – that life isn’t forever – they are able to reevaluate and live with the focus of older generations. I believe that through our service, Heart ‘n Home Volunteers are reminded of what really matters and gain the wise perspective of our patients, who teach us so much about how to live fully. As Volunteers, it’s our job to support our patients and their families with what means the most to them. It may be working on labeling a photo album, writing letters, or simply having some coffee and watching a movie together. I hope that this New Year is a time for you to recommit yourself to volunteering and serving others. May you focus on what matters most in your life and sharing the gifts you have with those close to you. Thank you so much for being an important part of our care teams and helping us all focus on living to the fullest.

Volunteer of The Month
Verna Vooris,
Fruitland Volunteer

Verna is one of the most selfless people I have ever met. She has a heart for service and a huge passion to serve those in her community. There have been multiple times in the last six months that I have called Verna to fill a last minute assignment. She has never once turned down the opportunity to assist in any way that she can. Recently, she has taken on a patient all the way in Council. She has transported this patient from Council to Ontario for appointments and then spent extra time to assist her with grocery shopping. She was so grateful for Verna. Another example of Verna’s dedication is when I received a call on a Friday that a caregiver needed someone to sit with her husband while she attended a wedding the next day. Verna jumped on the opportunity and then spent 6 hours at the patient’s house. When I called to see how it went, the caregiver described Verna as an angel in disguise and couldn’t thank me enough for sending such a wonderful Volunteer.

I am so grateful for the sweet spirit Verna has and for her love and compassion that she shows everyone who crosses her path. She brings joy and hope into people’s lives when they need it the most. She is an inspiration to me and I hope that others can see her compassion and be inspired, too.
Thank you, Verna, for demonstrating the Family Core Value Commit to Purpose.

- Charlotte Clements, Fruitland Volunteer Coordinator

Heart ‘n Home Hospice & Palliative Care relies on Volunteers to support excellent end of life care to each patient and family. By being a Volunteer, you can gain great personal fulfillment from knowing that you have made an impact in another person’s life. We have several Volunteer Trainings coming up and would appreciate you reaching out to the people in your life who could also share their gifts with our patients. Remind them of the simple, yet transformative ways Volunteers can give, such as providing companionship, offering a listening ear, sitting vigil, being a calming presence, providing respite for caregivers, and participating in rituals such as prayer, singing and reading. Even just sharing a snack and watching a football game with a patient and caregiver can make a world of difference. As Volunteers, we prove what Cicely Saunders said, “You matter because you are you; you matter to the last moment of your life, and we will do all we can, not only to help you die peacefully, but also to help you live until you die.” Thank you for increasing our impact! Every person makes a difference, one life, one visit at a time.
