Welcome, Whidbey Art Market!
|
|
|
|
Whidbey Art Market is a new Fiscally Sponsored Program under the WIAC 501(c)(3) nonprofit umbrella.
WAM is an informal and ever-changing group of Whidbey Island visual artists who come together to share their art in interesting and diverse locations across the island. Their events were conceived and planned in 2020 during the pandemic lockdown, when the artists sought inspiration to lift themselves out of isolation. In 2021 they produced four art markets, and in 2022 they held two more. Whidbey Art Market was founded by its current director, Kim Tinuviel.
Now in their third season, WAM has gained a regular and enthusiastic audience for their markets held on the Mothers' Day and Thanksgiving weekends.
REGISTER NOW FOR WHIDBEY ART MARKET’S MOTHER’S DAY WEEKEND SHOW (May 13-14)
Join us at a fun new location: Campfire in Langley!
All applications are due by March 15. Visit our website for details and to register.

Coupeville: Creative District?
|
|
|
|
What is a Creative District?
A Creative District is a fun place to live, work and visit. It's a geographically defined area of cultural and economic activity, and a place for people to gather to enjoy their community's arts and culture. A task force representing the Town of Coupeville is working towards State of Washington Creative District status.
What would this status do for Coupeville?
• The Creative District would augment existing efforts to make Coupeville a strong and supportive environment for creatives.
• The Creative District would support the arts, including culinary, performing, visual and literary.
Did you know that creative business revenues make up 13% of Washington State's economy?
The Coupeville effort was launched by leaders from the Pacific NorthWest Art School and is being supported by the Coupeville Chamber of Commerce, the Coupeville Historic Waterfront Association, the Coupeville Festival Association, Ebey's Landing National Historic Reserve, local artists and the Town of Coupeville.

March Featured Artist | Chris Cozine
Chris Cozine was born and raised on a small farm in the Puyallup Valley, when it was still a farm community. The family farm was nestled against a hill, and the local ponds, creeks, trees, fields (and the view of Mt. Rainier) served to inspire her painting.
Chris has won several first place awards in juried art shows, and a "Peoples' Choice" award at the Washington State Fair. She does landscapes, abstract and sometimes abstract landscapes. She says, "I have done paintings that look very photo-like, but nature and photographers do that so well. I like to create something a little impressionistic and unique, but still appealing.

WHIDBEY PHOTO • Finalist for Siena Award
Michael Holtby's photograph of Powder Dancer (left) has been selected as a finalist for a Siena Award, a highly competative international photo contest. He hopes to be included in the award presentations in Siena, Italy, later this year. We wish you success, Mike!
Mike continues to photograph men on Whidbey Island with interesting beards, primarily those with visually interesting dress and/or accessories. An example (right) from his last shoot is Ed Evans with his magic box.
So many beards, so little time!

For many years I have been meeting with a small group of friends to play cards. We come from a variety of backgrounds, outlooks and political perspectives. We tease each other a lot, rarely talk politics, but we do discuss Island County issues and concerns that strike us as important. Topics like the homeless, the ferries, crime, traffic, visitors, the Navy and local businesses.
What I have noticed is the lack of information and answers we have about our local concerns. My objective is to get information from reliable sources to the residents of Island County.
The January issue was an interview with newly re-elected Island County Sheriff Rick Felici. February was dedicated to a local writer who lived through the challenging changes of mid-20th-century Russia—a writer with the depth of history.

Focaccia ArtBread
Louie Rochon works primarily in large acrylic abstract, but he has recently found a passion for another creative outlet: Focaccia ArtBread! Louie creates these culinary works of art and then gives them away to his friends. He also bakes loaves of bread for the Langley Soup Kitchen.
Louie finds the large scale focaccia breads similar to a blank canvas, but says the focaccia is far tastier!
