On Education

Helping Prisoners

Recently I read a plea for the New York legislature to allocate more money for the prison system, to offer more educational opportunities to prisoners.

The article cited plenty of evidence that people who complete education programs while incarcerated have a far, far lower recidivism rate.

Though I'm sure technical and other issues would need to be overcome, if prisons could begin allowing access to online education, the benefit to the students and to society could be tremendous.

Meanwhile, Perelandra College regularly receives queries  from prisoners or relatives asking for information about what classes we offer using paper and U.S. mail.

We would be delighted to help these folks if we could develop an efficient system wherein profs perform administrative functions such as corresponding directly with prospective students, enrolling them, and so on.

We are looking for someone skilled in writing, preferably with a degree in English, Communication, or a related field, to take on this challenge.

Quit Making Excuses
At least until you get six-figure advances, when you meet people and they ask what you do, beware of telling them you’re a writer. Too often they’ll think you make lots of money. If you’re honest, you’ll admit you don’t. And suddenly they won’t appear to find you as interesting as they did when they saw dollar signs.

Or they’ll tell you they too are going to become writers as soon as they can find the time.

Nobody I’ve ever met has ample time to write. We get the time by ...
