At a memorial for my dear friend Gus, I sat beside Elena, a charming young woman who saw Gus as a second father. She has a well-paid job but longs for more time to paint, which she loves to do. She told me that Gus always encouraged people to follow their passions.
Gus trusted his own advice, and at the memorial, everyone who spoke about his work as a doctor stressed his passion for it. He was simply doing something he loved, which made him an accomplished and much-loved surgeon.
The Gas Crisis
Long ago, perhaps in another dimension, my friend Laurent arrived at my house and invited me to join him on an adventure. He was about to leave for New Jersey, intending to win over and marry a woman who rejected him.
I was a mess, depressed and afflicted with panic attacks. So I accepted the invitation. On the road, I took notes and began writing a story that became a mammoth novel, which I have been cutting and revising ever since.
Give yourself (or another reader) a Thanksgiving present and read about road trips,, soul mates, a famous writing school, Hopis, the Arab oil embargo, and a variety of neuroses in The Gas Crisis, book 3 of For America.
A Delightful Way to Save Money
To maximize your reading delight, start with Book 1, Supermen,. continue with This Rough Beast, Book 2, then dive into Book 3, The Gas Crisis, coming on Thanksgiving, preorder Book 4,War, coming on New Years Day, and, finally, don't fail to preorder Book 5, The Holy Grail, coming February 17.
Unless you are wealthy, don't wait. Each book is now only 99 cents but such bargains can't last long.
Hickey & McGee are offering the entire set of ten Hickey family crime novels for $40, which actually comes to $51.65 shipped and taxed. Still, ten new signed books -- some in trade paper, some in hardcover -- a whole highly acclaimed series, for $4 or $5 each, is beyond a bargain.
What a spectacular Christmas gift. You could even do like my thrifty friend Alan Russell and read them before you give them. Handle with care and no one will know.
