Background Music

To my shame, I had never heard of Nancy Griffith before I stumbled into her version of Bob Dylan's  "Boots of Spanish Leather".

Words to Live By?
I mean, you must take living so seriously
that even at seventy, for example, you'll plant olive trees—
and not for your children, either,
but because although you fear death you don't believe it,
because living, I mean, weighs heavier.

If it Feels Good, Do it?

On my recent road trip (see below), I listened to some podcasts on ebook marketing by Mark Coker, the founder of Smashwords, my favorite ebook publisher and distributor. Among his suggestions was to consider adding a brief discussion guide to each book.

As a long-time teacher and professor, I reckoned following the suggestion ought to be a cinch.

So, here's the discussion topic for
Midheaven: Respond to the once widely-endorsed expression  "If it feels good, do it."

Jodi, the narrator and main character, wrestles with that question because so did I, most overtly when I lived in a sort of commune and a bunch of us enjoyed arguing stuff like how in the heck could we tell right from wrong.

Of course religions offer plenty of answers to such questions, but for those of us who don't always trust religions, another common answer involved using the "if it feels good do it" formula. The glaring problem with that method, we agreed, was that to apply the formula we needed to define what the loaded word "good" meant.

My handy dandy MS Word thesaurus offers about a hundred synonyms in categories that could work with our discussion: decent; suitable; well-behaved; effective; high-quality; enjoyable; skillful; beneficial. Clearly, even without consulting a reputable dictionary or philosophical sourcebook, this discussion could go on for hours, days, years, or maybe lifetimes.

Like so many things in our lives, asking questions is a cinch, and even though reaching definitive answers may be a hopeless proposition, pondering them can be fun, which is one good reason for reading good  novels.

Please get your copy of
Midheaven, which is currently free on Smashwords with the code DM42E, and join Jodi McGee in struggling to figure out what the heck "good" means.
