Center Hosts Forum on Sustainability Policy
and Business Practice

The Beijing Center, Earth Institute, and The Sustainability Consortium, in partnership with the Walmart Foundation and the China Environmental United Certification Center, hosted a high level forum on May 8 to discuss Chinese enterprises’ experiences and strategies in sustainable development with a focus on supply chain. Earth Institute Lecturer in Discipline of Economics and Continuing Education Professor Satyajit Bose and research scholar Gong Guo presented the findings from a recent project with the consortium evaluating their work in China. Zhang Dawei, vice Chairman and Secretary General of the China Center for International Economic Exchanges gave a keynote speech. The forum attracted experts on sustainability-related issue from international organizations, think tanks, companies and universities.

State of Court Reform in China

On April 23, the Beijing Center hosted Columbia Law School Professor and Director of the Center for Chinese Legal Studies, Benjamin Liebman, and two other experts, Li Xiao, senior judge at the Supreme People's Court, and Wang Xixin, vice dean and professor at Peking University Law School.

Center Hosts Discussion on STEM Education and Careers with Government Officials

Michelle K. Lee, under secretary of Commerce for Intellectual Property and director of the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, and Zhang Peng, the state Intellectual Property Office deputy director general, spoke at Columbia Global Centers | East Asia on May 25 about education and careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Their talks highlighted common themes and was co-sponsored with the U.S. Embassy in Beijing.

We are delighted to announced that Ms. Bin Pei joined the Beijing Center on May 1 as Deputy Director. Previously, she worked at various international development organizations and at multiple departments at the Chinese Ministry of Civil Affairs.

Urban China Initiative Launches Photo Contest 2015
The Urban China Initiative, a joint effort established by our Center, Tsinghua University’s School of Public Policy and Management, and McKinsey & Company, launches its Photo Contest 2015, co-organized by the Photograph Association of China.

The Urban China Initiative is now accepting applications for an internship position in urbanization research.  

Columbia Professor Speaks on Women’s Economic Empowerment at Beijing+20

The Center welcomed Columbia’s R. Gordon Hoxie Professor of American History Alice Kessler-Harris, who spoke May 29 about women’s citizenship to explore how women’s changing experiences in the 21st century challenged the meaning of citizenship for all Americans. A brainstorming session was also held with Kessler-Harris and seven Chinese experts to discuss social protection in the welfare state and the challenges to economic opportunity for women.


Beijing Center to Host Columbia Certificate Training Course in the Summer
The Beijing Center is hosting a certificate training course on energy and environment offered by Earth Institute this summer in Beijing, and co-sponsoring a certificate training program in teaching Chinese and a student summer program on social science at Columbia.
