Columbia Global Centers | Mumbai invites you to a conversation with Jyoti Thottam, who leads the editorial board of The New York Times and has recently authored Sisters of Mokama: The Pioneering Women Who Brought Hope and Healing to India (Penguin Random House 2022), which traces the inspiring story of Nazareth Hospital in Mokama, Bihar and the courageous women behind it. Fascinated by her mother’s story, who trained as a nurse under the nuns in Mokama, Thottam draws upon twenty years of research to piece together a historical narrative that gives us a glimpse of a world rebuilding itself from the tumult of World War II and Partition; a world where many women could forge their own paths for the first time. The conversation will address these themes, expand on the author’s investigative process including her work with archives and oral histories, and locate the legacy of the women of Nazareth Hospital at a time when the world finds itself once again in need of deep care and healing.
