News from the Regional Office

Dear <<First Name>>,

From the launching in Peru of ReVista: The Harvard Review of Latin America at Universidad del Pacifico to the solidification of our student programs in Colombia, this past month we continued expanding our initiatives and partnerships across the Region. Although one of our main goals is to bring Harvard to Latin America, we strongly believe in the importance of bringing Latin America to Harvard. Through the Visiting Scholars and Fellows Program, we make that happen every year, by welcoming a number of distinguished scholars and professionals, who wish to spend one or two semesters at Harvard. The next application deadline for the program is on February 1, 2015.

With a full year ahead of us, we look forward to continuing building bridges between Harvard and the Region through interdisciplinary collaborations, as well as making a positive difference in our local communities in Latin America and at Harvard.

Sincerely,

Marcela Rentería
Program Director, Regional Office

Launch of Fall 2014 Issue of ReVista in Peru

On December 3, the David Rockefeller Center for Latin American Studies, in collaboration with Universidad del Pacífico, launched in Peru the fall 2014 issue of ReVista: The Harvard Review of Latin America. This issue is dedicated to Peru and analyzes various aspects of the country, including recent economic, political and social transformations, and the richness of Peruvian culture and gastronomy, among other topics. The event featured a keynote presentation by DRCLAS Advisory Committee Chair Tony Custer, as well as remarks by DRCLAS Executive Director Ned Strong and June Erlick, Editor-in-chief of ReVista. The event also included a panel discussion on the foreseeable future of Peru with distinguished scholars and professionals. The event concluded with the recognition of a myriad of Peruvian photographers who received an award for their photographs that were featured in the fall issue of ReVista, and an exhibition called “Los Rostros del Perú” by the Photography Association Ojos Propios. Inauguration of UTEC Campus

This past December Universidad de Ingeniería & Tecnología (UTEC) inaugurated its campus in Lima's neighborhood of Barranco. The campus is considered to be one of the most innovative and modern in Latin America due to its infrastructure and advanced technology. DRCLAS Director Brian Farrell and DRCLAS Executive Director Ned Strong attended the inaugural event, along representatives from UTEC's partner universities in the United States. This past October Eduardo Hochschild, founder of UTEC, and Fawwaz Habbal, Executive Dean of Harvard’s School of Engineering and Applied Sciences signed a historic agreement that establishes collaborations in research, innovations in engineering education, and student programs. The DRCLAS Regional Office will facilitate and provide ongoing support for these academic endeavors.

Granjeros del Mar Gourmet in Valdivia

From December 12-14, members of the Recupera Chile project participated in the Feria Gastronómica Marina (FEGAM) in Valdivia, Chile to promote the "Integrated Coastal Development: Sea Farmers initiative" (Granjeros del Mar). This event served as an opportunity to promote Granjeros del Mar's artisanal products to a community specialized in gourmet gastronomy. Chef Jeronimo Rosas, from the Bio Bio region, attended the fair and offered oyster tastings produced by artisanal fishermen and women who are part of Granjeros del Mar. One of the short-term goals of this initiative is to supply fresh seafood, cultivated by artisanal fishermen and women, to gourmet restaurants in the region. Visit of Professor Sheila Jasanoff to Chile

On December 10, the DRCLAS Regional Office organized a luncheon with Sheila Jasanoff, Professor of Science and Technology Studies at the Harvard Kennedy School of Government. This served as an opportunity for Professor Jasanoff to present on her research domains: innovation, environmental policy, and technology and society. Distinguished professionals attended the luncheon and spoke about the role of technology and innovation in their fields. The U.S Embassy in Chile and the Consejo de Innovación para la Competitividad organized Professor Jasanoff's visit to Chile, which featured workshops on how to develop plans to promote scientific research that could alleviate problems faced by Chilean society.

Expanding Networks in Colombia

This past December DRCLAS Regional Office's Marcela Renteria, Pilo Mella, Marcela Ramos and Marco Perez-Moreno visited Colombia to meet with
collaborating organizations, Harvard alumni and potential partner institutions. This served as an opportunity to increase the visibility of the Regional Office, strengthen existing relationships and develop new partnerships, which in turn create more opportunities for Harvard faculty and students interested in Colombia. One of the results of this visit is an increase in the number of non-profit, governmental, and medical partner institutions, providing more diverse opportunities for Harvard students participating in the 2015 DRCLAS Pre-Med Program and Summer Internship Program
