Picture of Biblical Interpretation class
With Sarah, her parents, and one of my Mexican families during my visit to Mexico in early June.
Dear friends,
Two weeks ago I taught the first half of my short (16 hour) biblical interpretation class in our nivelatorio program. The first day I faced an uphill battle—teaching the basics of Spanish grammar necessary to do sentence diagramming. The second day, however, things started to click. After diagramming Colossians 1:24-2:5, we did a comparative analysis with four other translations. Students saw details in the text that never would have caught their attention otherwise. Then we moved to making explanatory outlines, where the goal was to explain the flow of thought in each major division and the smaller subdivisions of the text in order to help us identify the purpose and main idea of the passage. Students had made outlines before, but they said this was the most helpful way they had done it, because I didn’t want them to just summarize a section in a phrase but rather explain its logic. Students still have a lot of room to grow in this area, but I was encouraged by the positive steps. This Thursday and Saturday we’ll have the second half of the course, where we will focus on identifying theological principles in a passage and applying the Bible responsibly to our contexts today.
Please pray for clarity for me in explaining sometimes difficult concepts and for the six students in the class as they seek to see how to incorporate what they are learning into their ministries. Most students are actively involved in lay or pastoral ministries. One of them, Marjorie, is the mom of the little girl Esther we had been praying for last year in her life-threatening medical issues, but who is now doing much better. Thankfully Esther has recovered to the point where Marjorie is able to look toward studying more, and she and her husband Wilcar (who is about to graduate from our undergraduate program) are going to start a church plant soon. Praise God for his faithfulness!
I had a wonderful short trip to Mexico City at the beginning of June. I attended a friend’s beautiful wedding, visited the church I had served at during my year there in 2011-2012, saw my two host families, reconnected with leaders and fellow participants from the Avance program, and spent quality time with Sarah and her parents (who are missionaries in Mexico).
I will be in the U.S. from June 28 to July 11. I will first be in Los Angeles, visiting my brother and his family along with my parents, then will drive back to Montana for two days, have six days in Montana, and then two days in Alabama with my sister and her family before heading back to Colombia. I am blessed to have the opportunity to be with Sarah for the first half of the trip, since she was going to be in Los Angeles for work and was able to take off some time to spend time with my family there and in Montana.

Right after Sarah leaves, on Wednesday, July 6, I will be sharing about my last year and a half in Colombia from 7:00-8:00 p.m. at Faith Church in Kalispell (405 Liberty St.). Everyone is welcome to attend! I will be sharing stories about how God has been working here at the Biblical Seminary of Colombia and in and through my life. I will also give a shorter 15-minute update on my ministry during the service at Faith Church on Sunday, July 3. I know that this is a busy time right around the 4th of July holiday, but I hope to see many of you!
Thank you again for your prayers and to the many faithful financial partners who help make it possible for me to serve in this ministry!
Last day of Greek 2 class (one student missing). This is a great group whom I have gotten to know well in two semesters of Greek, Church History 1, and, in the case of three of the students, through my role overseeing the devotional meetings for single students.
