Protect South Portland

Please join us on Wednesday, June 25th at 6:30 PM
at Mahoney Middle School in South Portland.

The first 350 people to arrive at the meeting will receive a beautiful "Clear Skies" tee shirt designed by a local artist!

This is it! We’re almost there! And we need YOU for this final stretch! Next Wednesday, June 25, the South Portland City Council will hold the first in a series of four public meetings to consider and vote on a new ordinance. This Clear Skies Ordinance would block the oil industry from loading tar sands oil—the dirtiest oil on earth—onto tankers in Casco Bay, protecting the South Portland community from toxic air pollution and other associated adverse impacts.

link to the ordinance:

South Portland's action is the culmination of hundreds of citizens coming together over the last year and a half to protect the city—and by extension our whole state—from tar sands. Together, we've made fantastic progress, but we need your help to get over the finish line.

The first meeting is critical because it will set the tone for the City Council's consideration of the new ordinance.

Last fall, the oil industry spent $750,000 in just over two months to defeat our South Portland ballot initiative, and already their fleet of high-paid attorneys has threatened to sue the city for its initial action on tar sands. We fully expect the oil industry to fight this new ordinance—and to fight hard. That’s why it’s so important that the Council sees the groundswell of public support for it.

If we're successful, South Portland will make history as the first city in the United States to block the oil industry's dirty tar sands plans. Now that’s something worth attending a local meeting for!

Hope to see you there,

Meg Braley and the PSP team
