Three Color-Themed Lunches!

There are some people who think making school lunches is just the most fun daily project ever. There are constant reminders of this on various parenting blogs, with sandwiches cut in the shapes of Pixar characters. I just found a Pinterest board called Cute Kid Lunches I Will Never Make. And recently, An Open Letter to My Kids About Their Lunches has been making the rounds. It includes statements like “I will never disguise your ham sandwiches as sheep, or your carrots as flowers. Because no matter how you dress it up, it’s still ham and carrots. I believe you kids are smart enough to figure that out and whine accordingly.”

I’m pretty firmly in this camp. I, too, would never make a rose out of a Tootsie Roll for a lunchbox snack. But in the scheme of things, it’s nice to have a little fun without finding yourself with a butterfly-shaped cookie cutter, a couple of chives, and a pair of tweezers in hand at 5:30 a.m. (#nevergoingtohappen).

So I did find it surprisingly satisfying to pick a color and see if I could figure out, with the help of my kids, how to build a balanced, appealing lunch around it. This is where we’ve landed so far:

1. An All-Orange Lunch
2. An All-Yellow Lunch
2. An All-Green Lunch
We're working our way up to blue. Packing a lunch may never be my favorite activity, but when I have to do it, I might as well find a way to make it a little less irksome and a little more entertaining.
No, you hang up first,
