I am one of those people who usually scoffs at New Year’s resolutions. For amateurs, doomed to fail, such an artifice . . . thinks me. Usually. And so I don’t make any, because what’s the point?

But now I am thinking that not making New Year’s resolutions because I’m convinced they don’t work, and won’t instigate change, is the best way to guarantee that there in fact won’t be any chance of change. Yes, January first is just a date, an artificial construct. Yes, real change has to come from internal motivation. But you know . . . what the hell? There are some things in my life I wouldn’t mind improving and New Year’s Eve is as good a time as any to try and make my move.

So this year I’m not being scornful of resolutions, I’m embracing them. And on that note, pretty much everyone I know would like to be eating a little better and healthier, cooking a little more. And since I’ve just spent the past several weeks enabling everyone in my world to make more haystack cookies and four-cheese pastas, I’ll turn the spotlight on five healthy-ish recipes that won’t leave you feeling cheated.
