A Labor Day Menu + The Chance to Revamp Your Kitchen Tools!

Hi, friends,
And the weirdest summer ever comes to an unofficial close . . .  a summer of eyes over masks. But there were walks, some good swims, a bunch of socially distanced barbecues, and copious time with family (with all the good and bad bells and whistles), and we are still awash in tomatoes and corn.
Okay, so Labor Day! I refuse to be sad about it. We will be going to see some good friends in Connecticut on Sunday for a cookout, which will be fun and kind of normal-feeling (minus the hugging and the sharing of forks). Also, technically summer goes on for a few more weeks, and while I am not a technical person most of the time, here I’m a Gregorian calendar kind of a gal.
I acknowledge that this email lands at the start of the holiday, so you may have started thinking about your menu already. But you may need an extra side or a vegetarian option, or you may be like me—always happy to add one more dish to the offerings.

But first, this: After months of quarantine cooking projects, we head into fall, into back-to-school season . . . whether that's literal, virtual, or just how many of us feel (even if it's been decades since we were actually heading to classes). The rhythm of life changes, and our cooking changes with it. So wouldn't it be nice to give your kitchen arsenal a little refresh? I've partnered with Kuhn Rikon to put together an amazing bundle of kitchen essentials for one lucky winner. Kuhn Rikon is a maker of Swiss-made kitchenware, knives, and pressure cookers designed with fun, color, and function in mind. Anyone just beginning to build their kitchen or ready to upgrade their cooking skills and tools would be happy to unpack this box of cooking supplies. It includes Kuhn Rikon's Covered Wok Skillet and Swiss Multi-Ply Frying Pan, a spatula, a peeler, two knives, and more—a more than $400 value! Plus it wouldn't be right to not throw in a copy of each of my cookbooks: The winner will also receive a copy of The Mom 100 Cookbook and Dinner Solved! Click below for the rules and to enter the sweepstakes! This grilled chicken is marinated with fresh orange juice and sambal oelek, or whatever garlicky hot sauce you like best. Leftover chicken is great over green salads.

Make it while you can. Tomatoes, basil, and corn or zucchini if you wish. It’s just that simple pasta salad that makes summer seem to linger longer.

A mayo-free potato salad is lighter and cleaner tasting than its creamy cousins. Also potentially vegan. This one has classic flavors and comes together in twenty minutes.

Fifteen minutes to the easiest, summeriest side dish.

A hefty dollop of Dijon mustard mingles with onion, Worcestershire sauce, and thyme in this deeply flavorful marinade for steak.

This is my favorite turkey burgers recipe. I make extra and eat leftover patties for breakfast. Highly recommend this.

For us, if there is one dish that screams summer the loudest (in a soft and soothing way) it’s grilled pizza. The toppings change from dinner to dinner, but not once, not ever, has anyone in my family or friend group ever said “grilled pizza again” in anything but the most enthusiastic way.

Look at this photo and tell me this wouldn’t be the grandest finale of all grand finales to a Labor Day flavor fest. You can switch up the ice cream flavor of course, but this is the combo my family craves.
