Hyatt Regency at Gainey Ranch

November 8-11
2019

If the Annual meeting of the Western was a person, it would now be eligible for Medicare.  For our 65th annual meeting, we sojourn to the Phoenix area we last visited in late September1991when the ambient temp was about 100.  This meeting will occur on November 8-11 when the valley of the sun is more amenable to being poolside (and school hasn’t just started). The locale is the Hyatt Regency at Gainey Ranch in Scottsdale.  It is a 4.5-star resort with 10 swimming pools, waterslide, spa and the usual golf and tennis onsite.

Our room rate is $285/night plus 14% taxes.  Our intrepid Site Selection Committee has arranged for the usual resort fee of $29 to be waived and self parking is free (valet is $21/day).  Each room has free wi-fi and maid gratuity is at your discretion ($4 recommended).

The resort is 20 miles from Phoenix Sky Harbor airport.  For shuttle service, the Hyatt recommends Transtyle (www.transtyle.com) who charges $50 for up to 4 persons and $70 for 5-6.  The venue also likes kids/parents and offers 9-5 Camp Hyatt every day to entertain and feed them at $15/hour and evening Camp 5-9 on Friday and Saturday—arrange with concierge 24 hours in advance.

Meeting registration will commence near the summer solstice and the meeting fee will as usual cover three breakfasts and three dinners for the registrant and a guest.  The local night venue is a work in progress at this point.

Online room reservations at
https://www.hyatt.com/en-US/group-booking/SCOTT/G-WNSO

Save the dates for this meeting in a fun place to gather.  Of course, what else is going on in early November?  The coast appears clear!

See you in Phoenix.

IN MEMORIAM

John T. Bonner, MD

It is likely that on December 5th, 2018, you caught a glimpse of the nationally televised memorial service for George H. W. Bush, our 41st President.  On that date, far fewer of us noticed the services for Jack Bonner, MD, friend and 59th President of the Western.  It seemed like good ol' Jack was always around and one suspects the frequency of his annual meeting attendance was exceeded by no one (and certainly included our last meeting in Hawaii even when the malignant glioma that was to take him on November 21st had recurred with a vengeance).

Jack, along with John Slater, anchored Fresno neurosurgery for decades and although Jack stopped doing neurosurgery some years ago, he continued practicing as a California Disability Determination Service evaluator for years, only stopping in early 2018.

Dr. Bonner held many positions in organized medicine and was a strong supporter and contributor to the AMA and the CMA.  He was a past President of the California Association of Neurological Surgery (CANS) and the Fresno Madera Medical Society as well as a recipient of the CANS Pevehouse award and the FMMS Lifetime Achievement award.

Dr. Bonner was a Montana boy and high school valedictorian who, when the time came for college, had a hankering for California and Stanford but couldn’t pass up the scholarship he got to Carrol College in Helena.  With no medical school in Montana, he attended the University of Chicago (another scholarship) for his MD and the University of Washington for neurosurgical training.  This writer had Jack for a chief resident and never could feel friendly toward him until serving with him at CANS and the Western where I learned to like and respect him for his equanimity, calm and knowledge of medical practice.  Following residency, Jack gave academics a try at the University of Missouri but soon opted for private practice in Fresno.

Jack and his RN wife Romona, whom he met and married when at the UC, formed a dandy duo when it came to conversation and task completions.  Both formed strong connection to the Fresno State University’s sports teams and enology endeavors.  Romona recently preceded Jack in death after 52 years of marriage but Jack subsequently enjoyed the support of his daughter Cheryl who along with her sister Kerry and brother David (plus beloved 5th German Shorthaired Pointer Liesl) are the surviving Bonners.

Donations in Dr. Bonner’s memory can be directed to Stanford Neurosurgery, Brain Tumor Research Program. Please make checks payable to Stanford University and mail to: Allie Gregorian, Stanford Medical Center Development, 3172 Porter Drive, Suite 210, Palo Alto, CA 94304. Memo Line: Brain Tumor Research c/o Drs. Recht/Shuer.

Remembrances may also be sent to The University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine, Development Office, 5801 S. Ellis Avenue, Chicago, IL 60637 or to Carroll College, 1601 N Benton Avenue, Helena, MT 59625 or to German Shorthaired Pointer Rescue of Northern California, P.O. Box 933, Menlo Park, CA 94026.
The Western wishes to express special thanks to the

Special Guest at 2019 Meeting

The Western Neurosurgical Society is honored to have Regis W. Haid, Jr. M.D. deliver the 2019 George Ablin Memorial Lecture titled “Spinal Alignment: Keys to the Kingdom.”

Dr. Haid grew up in Appalachia and Tennessee. At an early age, he developed a love for farming, hard work and fixing what needed fixing.  He received his undergraduate degree in 1978 from the University of Notre Dame with majors in philosophy and theology, and a minor in classical literature. While at Notre Dame, he excelled at Rugby, being named All American and playing on the national team.

Dr. Haid received his MD at West Virginia University in 1982 where he was AOA and served as President of his class.  He completed his neurosurgical residency in 1988 at West Virginia University and completed a Fellowship with Dr. Joseph Maroon in Pittsburgh. In 1988, he completed an orthopedic spine fellowship at the University of Florida.  From 1989 to 1993 Dr. Haid served in the United States Air Force, leading the Spine Program at Wilford Hall Medical Center in San Antonio.  Subsequently, he joined the faculty at Emory University and was promoted to Professor in 2001. During that time, he was Director of the Spinal Fellowship Program and trained many leaders in spine surgery.  In 2003 he went into private practice and was a founding partner of Atlanta Brain and Spine Care.

A renowned surgeon and educator, Dr. Haid has been visiting professor at 30 universities worldwide.  He has been a Course Director more than 280 times, lectured at over 200 Spinal Courses, and presented over 500 papers. As a widely published author, Dr. Haid has contributed over 135 scientific articles to peer-reviewed journals, has completed 13 textbooks, and has written more than 85 chapters on the treatment of spinal disorders. He is an American Board of Neurological Surgery Scholar.

Dr. Haid has served on the Editorial and Review Boards of several leading journals. His research interests include spinal reconstruction techniques. His research has resulted in over 20 patents and implants related to cervical lateral mass plating, anterior cervical plating, posterior, anterior, lateral and transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion techniques, cervical arthroplasty, lateral lumbar fusion and posterior cervical and thoraco-lumbar instrumentation. His patents include the first artificial cervical spine disc joint cleared by the FDA. His designed implants for spinal reconstruction are used worldwide.

Dr. Haid is an active member and leader within several professional neurosurgical and spinal societies, including the American Association of Neurological Surgeons, the Congress of Neurological Surgeons, the Neurosurgical Society of America and the Cervical Spine Research Society.  He is a former Chairman of the Joint Section on Disorders of the Spine and Peripheral Nerve, having been given the Meritorious Service Award. He has served on the Board of Directors of the Think First Foundation, FIENS, the Neurosurgery Research & Education Foundation, the Neuropoint Alliance (NPA), and the Lumbar Spine Research Society.  He is a former Board of Director of the AANS and currently serves as Vice President of the AANS. He is currently Chair of the NREF. He has given the Schneider Lecture at the AANS, as well as the Penfield Lecturer at the Canadian Neurosurgical Society.

Dr. Haid and his wife Mary Ellen have six children and six grandchildren, most of whom live “out west” in New Mexico and Colorado.  Dr. Haid’s hobbies include skiing with his children at their family cabin in Big Sky Montana, and trying to spend more time at his farms.  He is very active in several philanthropic Boards, most notably the Art Institute of Chicago school.
