Promoting better business practices and raising financial management capabilities within the construction industry are some of the NZIOB's main goals, which are closely aligned with the Construction Sector Accord's objectives.

Under the CARTERS-sponsored Building Legends programme, experts from BDO have prepared a six-hour programme that will be delivered over two half-day sessions.

The course is aimed at:

  • Owners of new companies;
  • Practitioners who would like to up-skill their financial literacy within the construction sector;
  • Senior team members and sub-contractor firms, i.e. Quantity Surveyors, Project Managers, or Construction Managers who have (or are about to have) a shareholding in the business; and
  • Owners or senior managers of the full range of businesses that operate in the construction industry, i.e. main and sub-contractors, design professionals, suppliers.
Material covered:
  • The construction economic cycle, what to expect and how to respond at each stage;
  • Techniques to identify the difference between a 'Robust Business' and a 'Fragile Business', and strategies on next steps should you find yourself in a 'Fragile Business' status;  
  • Profitability focus and suggested benchmark targets to adhere to;
  • Ideal capital structure for a business in the construction industry, i.e. one that will enable businesses to weather downturns, without hamstringing their operations;
  • Forecasting;
  • Cashflow management including bank relationship management;
  • Governance what should be in monthly reports, project vs company governance, governance basics;
  • Interpretation of financial statements and projections/financial literacy;
  • Understanding and measuring work in progress;
  • Retentions regime;
  • Risk management;
  • Tax issues in construction;
  • Staffing the accounting function;
  • Accounting systems and software;
  • Common mistakes and oversights others make;
  • What to do when things get tough; and
  • Lessons from recent court cases.

Martin Veitch Chartered Accountant

A Partner since 2009, Martin is in charge of the Business Advisory Division at BDO Christchurch. With 20 years' experience, Martin focuses on providing professional, proactive advice to his clients. Martin has clients in various commercial sectors, but a specific interest in advising construction related businesses.

Nick is an Advisory Partner in the BDO's East Tamaki office where he works with a range of clients in a wide variety of businesses, including property, construction and family businesses. Nick is involved with corporate finance transactions, valuations and general business advisory work, and has more than thirteen years of business services, audit, business recovery, and restructuring and commercial experience. He spent the first four years of his career in the “Big 4” working in Business Advisory Services and Business Recovery before moving to London. Nick worked for BHP Billiton, the largest company in Australasia in various finance roles for three and a half years working in London, Johannesburg, Melbourne, and Brisbane before settling in Sydney with the company. He returned to Auckland in 2013, joining BDO.

Husain Suterwala Chartered Accountant
Advisory Manager and Construction Specialist, BDO Auckland

Husain is an Advisory Manager in the construction team where he works closely with James and Nick. He has client service responsibilities for many of the more complex construction groups and is frequently the first point of contact for a wide range of issues raised with clients for which they need assistance. Husain has a strong understanding of the IFRS financial statement issues impacting construction companies, the tax issues which are particular to the industry and the construction-specific software packages commonly used, and assists with many of the succession plans, valuations, and banking negotiations which arise. Clients appreciate his direct and comprehensive advice on a wide range of issues for both head-constructors and sub-contractors as well as developers.
