Our first day was started with our career speaker, from the Iowan legislature. Ms. Angel Banks-Adams, a fiscal legislative analyst, came in to discuss the vital role that mathematics plays in lawmaking. The girls completed an exercise on how to create a state budget with a high-level perspective and its' potential impact on social issues.
The group then did timed worksheets on addition and multiplication to begin tracking their progress throughout the month. After a quick break outside, the girls started on how to budget for college, and through this creative budgeting process, they practiced foundational math skills. The day was wrapped up with a presentation on groundbreaking women of color who had earned their Ph.D.'s in Mathematics.
We’re all excited for next week! Our career speaker for week 2 is Jenelle Meyer, Ph.D. in Genetics from Corteva AgriSciences!
