The Pursuit of Knowledge
Last month, our Peer Mentors began learning the basics of creating web applications using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. The curriculum chosen aligns to national computer standards, gives them access to 350+ CS courses and prepares them for the upcoming workshops in 2021. They also get a stipend to learn! The peer mentors will receive a certificate of completion, with application to assert their learings. This is an example of our mission, "to provide the competitive edge needed to succeed academically, and vocationally..." We will continue to grow our upskilling initiatives in all areas of STEM for our students. If you know of a student in the 10th-12th grade that enjoys STEM subjects, contact us at info@jewelsacademy.org to join our program. We have two open positions.

Thank You, Telligen!
In a recent press release, we shared the exciting news of Telligen Community Initiative in awarding us a $9,500 grant to support our Young Emerging Scientists (Y.E.S.) program. We are very grateful for their patronage. In our January press release about the grant, Dr. Wayne said, "Telligen Community Initiative has been a wonderful supporter of Jewels Academy. Many of our students pursue a career in the health care industry. The continued support from Telligen has allowed the building of a workforce pipeline for underserved young women to pursue higher education with the long-term goal of STEM career attainment." We will continue striving to provide our students with the opportunities to immerse themselves in the wonderful world of STEM.

Did You Know?: MLK Edition!
In honor of MLK day, which is on the 18th, here are some less-known facts about the inspiring civil rights leader:
- His birth name is actually Michael, not Martin. It became Martin after his dad became traveled to Germany and was inspired by Martin Luther, the Protestant Reformation leader there.
- MLK entered college at the age of 15! He skipped grades nine and twelve and enrolled himself in Morehouse College (located in Atlanta, Georgia) in 1944
- He is one of two Americans to have their birthday observed as a national holiday (with the other being George Washington).
