Jewels Academy Goes Virtual!

At Jewels Academy, we believe that even isolation cannot stop inspirational education. With this goal in mind, we announced our second ever virtual event: a team-based virtual camp. Over the course of six weeks, students worked together to imagine, design, and create an app that fulfills a need in their community.

With a total of 18 students divided between two separate classes, Virtual App Camp reached students all the way from Washington to Maryland, and as far south as South Carolina, and Georgia. This marks the first time a Jewels Academy program has gone national. The students ranged from one very engaged 3rd grader up to 10th grade.

Students in this program were guided by our instructors through their app's development, teaching them about computer science, applied math, and critical problem-solving. They presented their progress at weekly check-ins, getting feedback from the mentors and instructors.

Although the student's time in the camp has ended, (much to the disappointment of some!) on Wednesday, July 29th, the students presented their apps to a panel of judges, including special guests from our sponsors, Cognizant and Microsoft. The presentations were judged on four categories which were research, technical functionality, presentation and its impact to benefit the community. The winner determined by the judges will receive a prize of a $100 Amazon gift card for first place and a $50 Amazon gift card for second place for each class (primary and advance).

Because of our success at Virtual App Camp, we at Jewels Academy have made the decision to convert our October YES programming to a virtual format, acting as a sequel to the summer camp.

VIRTUAL MATH TUTORING

Jewels Academy launched its summer math program to encompass virtual math tutoring.  The tutoring camp took in students from the Des Moines Metro in grades 4th -8th, where they worked through troubles with word problems, learned multiplication tables, discussed why fractions are difficult as well as the value of mistakes.

When asked about their thoughts on the program, one student replied, "I liked how the tutors engaged our thoughts and questions."

The program will be reintroduced for the fall session starting September 15th.

CONGRATULATIONS
to our high school and college class of 2020 graduates!
