This past year, Drake University opened two new STEM buildings on campus: the Science Connector building and Collier-Scripps. They now house academic programs in biochemistry, biophysics, neuroscience, data analytics, and more, with updated equipment, labs, and new majors for students. For our third week of Math Camp, the girls received a private tour of the Science Connector Building.
Our speaker and guide was Dr. Heidi Sleister, a professor of Biology at Drake who kicked off the day with a presentation on genetics. She and her assistant, Grace, then took the group to see the beginner labs in the Biology/Psychology department before showing them the upgraded labs in the new STEM center. The girls were able to see what sort of equipment and projects are involved in college-level science, and learned how to use the high-end pipettes that Dr. Sleister uses in her everyday work.
After lunch at Drake's dining hall, everyone came back for a lesson on different levels of education and to do their Math Minutes. The day finished up with a speed multiplication game, with the winners receiving their very own Drake merchandise.
Next week, we'll be back in our usual location. The girls had a blast getting some college experience, and we can't wait for future trips to Drake!
