Meet Our Newest Members!

Welcome, President Barbara Stinson!  Jewels Academy Newest Board Member

Mrs. Stinson assumed leadership of the World Food Prize Foundation on January 4, 2020, building on a career of championing policy, research, and project innovations through collaborative solutions. She became the second president of the Foundation since it was established in 1986 by Dr. Norman E. Borlaug.

She earned a master’s degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a Bachelor of Arts in environmental conservation from the University of Colorado, Boulder. She and her family relocated to Des Moines, Iowa from Denver, Colorado.  Mrs. Stinson's depth of nonprofit management and global experiences will be a major asset for Jewels Academy's strategic plan.  Learn more about President Stinson, here.

Welcome, Alumna and Americorps Member Elise Baty!
Elise is completing her first year at Des Moines Area Community College with aspirations to pursue k-12 education. She will shadow Ms. Joy (our program director) during her service and gain further insight into her education area of focus.  She's interested in teaching science, literature, and math, but is also open to being a special education and art teacher.  We are ecstatic to have her back in this service capacity!  Welcome Back, Elise!

Winners of Jewels Academy!

Ph.D. Student to Ph.D. Candidate

Our Young Emerging Scientist (Y.E.S.) instructor, Nichelle'Le K. Carrington, moved from a Ph.D. student to a Ph.D. candidate! Her research focuses on "Developing methods and software that analyzes data from real utilities to improve the resilience of power systems and the description of the customer energy usage patterns." She's created a tool that has shown great interest in the utility power industry! Well done, Nichelle'Le! Well done indeed.

Ranking #2 in the State

We are so very proud of Saata Corneh, a Jewels Academy’s peer mentor! She placed second at her state Speech and Debate tournament in the Original Oratory category.  She also placed second in the state in her science project, "The Paradontax Paradox" in the Cellular & Molecular Biology category, she’s only a junior! She is gifted in STEM subjects, writing, and oratory skills.  Well done Saata! Well done!
