**Young Emerging Scientists - Fall Recap!**
Thanks to everyone who made our Fall Reconnect such a success! We had the opportunity to work with some fantastic organizations and the turnout was amazing for both of our October programs! ISU's FLEx (Forward Learning Experience) kicked us off on October 8th in collaboration with our "Siblings Day". Our young scientists experienced modules in full-scale virtual and digital prototyping / hands-on experience with advanced technologies. On October 15th, we hosted our "Truth Tester" workshop, where the girls participated in creating a lie detector test. They learned about how physiological changes interact with circuitry. Both programs were huge hits among our students, and we can't thank you all enough for making it happen!

Scientist of the Month:
Marie M. Daly
Marie Maynard Daly was an American biochemist who happened to be the first African American woman in the United States to earn a PhD in chemistry.

The early research of Marie Maynard Daly (1921–2003) included studies of the effects of cholesterol on the mechanics of the heart, the effects of sugars and other nutrients on the health of arteries, and the breakdown of the circulatory system as a result of advanced age or hypertension. Later she studied how proteins are produced and organized in the cell.

A Word from Me, the Jewels Academy Intern
My name is Etta Moline, and I'm currently an undergraduate student at Drake University here in Des Moines. I have been working as a student intern here at Jewels Academy for about two months, and it has been so rewarding even in that short amount of time.

As a Health Sciences major at Drake, it is extremely personal to me what this organization does for the young girls in the community. I absolutely love that I am able to contribute to the growth and empowerment of these young women. I only have a few weeks left here, but I have already taken so much away from working here and being a part of the great work that Jewels Academy does.

A huge thank you goes out to Kim Wayne, who has helped me so much with the work that I have been doing for this wonderful organization. Thanks for welcoming me to Jewels Academy with open arms!

Siblings Day Re-Cap!
On October 8th, Jewels Academy and ISU FLEx came together to kick off our Fall Reconnect Programming. Students and their siblings had the opportunity to work with virtual and digital prototyping, and were given the valuable experience of working hands-on with advanced technologies. FLEx allows for students to gain these experiences with virtual reality, circuit building, immersive visualization, and many other programs. This program was a huge success and our staff and students were very happy with how it turned out. We can't wait to have further collaborations with this organization in the future!
