Summarizing Summer with Jewels Academy!

Dear Parents, Guardians, and Supporters of Jewels Academy,

This summer was quite the eventful one for JA! In June, we had our STEM Innovator students present their final pitch, as well as our annual App Camp. In July, we had our "Create Your Own Speaker" camp. We had the pleasure of exposing the students in these programs to STEM! Read on in this newsletter for a summary of our Speaker camp, as well as the STEM Innovator students' final pitch!

Speaker Camp: A Recap

Last month, we hosted: our “Build Your Speaker” camp! Every Saturday, at 9:15 am, 13 students reported to the Mickle Center to get hands-on experience creating a speaker from scratch.

On the first day, Dr. Nichelle’Le Carrington, our instructor, taught the students about the parts of a circuit and then demonstrated how to solder electrical components to a circuit. Eventually, the young scholars began soldering parts to their circuits that controlled various features from sound and LED lights to resisters to reduce the overloading of the circuits.

Before we knew it, the last day came, and we celebrated with the students, their families, and the staff in honor of their hard work! We even had some ice cream cake donated by one of the parents!

We are very proud of the young scholars' projects finishing to completion! We’ve watched them go from storming to norming through their projects and becoming budding engineers.

Congratulations to the 2022 STEM Innovator Students!

On June 9th, 2022, three high school students in Jewels Academy’s new STEM Innovator gave a remarkable group pitch about their money-saving app, Bank Budgeters, in front of judges, sponsors, and parents. These students, who came from different parts of Iowa, spent nearly five weeks brainstorming, drafting, and refining their idea into a product with wide-reaching applications, as well as learning the fundamentals of being a successful entrepreneur.

The students devised a plan for an app that would essentially help people not to overspend on miscellaneous items. They explained that, after completing a survey to determine what kind of budget and points for redeeming rewards (gift cards, coupons, etc. The judges gave the students great reviews, complimenting the hard work they put together a group pitch.

We are so proud of the work our students have done these past few weeks. We’re sure that, as they’ve shown during STEM Innovator, they’ll continue to do many amazing things. Congrats to the high school STEM Innovators who took the summer course and gained college experience and/or earned credits!
