DNA, Fractions, and Life Skills with Jewels

The second week of Math Camp began with the story of a woman behind NASA's third human space flight - the event behind the movie 'Hidden Figures'.  Thanks to Ms. Katrina, the girls learned that media portrayal doesn't always show the hard work of the brilliant minds behind some of mankind's greatest achievements.
Our guest speaker, Dr. Jenelle Meyer,  gave a fascinating presentation on her work in genetics.  After going through the basics of genes and how she manipulates them with math everyday, the group strung together DNA bead bracelets to demonstrate their own genetic traits.   They then moved on to their timed Math Minutes before beginning to learn about adding fractions with Ms. Joy.
The day wrapped up with a lesson on budgeting for life expenses with Dr. Maria.  Everyone was provided with a salary, and made their own decisions on how to spend their money responsibly.
Next week, we'll be touring the new STEM facilities at Drake University.  Stay tuned!
