A Message from Dean Cristina Amon

U of T engineers are at the forefront of innovations in sustainability, one of the most important challenges of our times. Through our world-leading research and educational programs, we are improving the quality of life of people around the world while reducing negative impacts on our air, water, land and climate.

Our new building, the Centre for Engineering Innovation & Entrepreneurship (CEIE), will embody this commitment by integrating sustainable features such as rainwater collection, advanced air delivery systems and rooftop photovoltaic cells to harness the sun’s energy. When it opens in 2017, the CEIE will provide a home for the Institute for Sustainable Energy and the Institute for Water Innovation. These institutes unite Faculty researchers and industry partners across disciplinary lines, and empower collaborative solutions in fields such as alternative energy generation and efficient carbon sequestration, conversion and storage.

We weave sustainability into our curriculum through undergraduate minors in environmental engineering and sustainable energy, Master of Engineering emphases in advanced water technologies and process design, sustainable aviation and sustainable energy and other initiatives across all our departments and institutes.

We have a strong track record of innovative contributions. Last year our undergraduates designed, built and tested a vehicle that can travel 3,421 miles on a single gallon of fuel, winning the Shell Eco-Marathon Americas. Our graduates have brought numerous clean-tech and energy-efficiency innovations to market, including environmentally-friendly biodiesel fuels, the world’s most efficient light bulb and next-generation photovoltaic cells with colloidal quantum dot technology.

I hope the stories in this issue of The Engineering Newsletter inspire us all to discover additional ways to integrate the latest sustainability principles into our own work and daily lives. I thank you for your commitment to building a more sustainable, greener and friendlier world.

— Cristina

Leadership Education Specialist, Institute for Leadership Education in Engineering

Fun fact: Jordan worked as a Governor General’s Foot Guard for several years. On many occasions, he was one of the motionless guards in the red tunic and bearskin hats.
