A message from Euan MacDonald MBE

Euan MacDonald

I would like to thank everyone who has supported the Centre and taken such an interest over the past year. It has been fantastic to see the progress being made in such a wide range of projects from basic science to voice banking and the MND Register. It's also been good to see the range of collaborations widen with people sharing similar aims. The opening of the Anne Rowling Clinic this year has been exciting for everyone. We now have access to clinic space and facilities which will hopefully help in the ultimate goal - applying the research to patients.

So from a patient's point of view, thanks to all the staff and keep at it! It is greatly appreciated. Particular thanks also to the Centre's supporters who have organised and attended events, sponsored people and shown such interest. Thank you all very much and have a Merry Christmas!

The Euan MacDonald Centre, whilst retaining its anchor in Edinburgh, can now be said to be Scotland-wide, with Principal Investigators in Glasgow, St Andrews, Dundee and Aberdeen. Moreover, our collaborators are worldwide, particularly throughout Western Europe and North America. This ethos of partnership is important to the Centre: it will inform clinical care and access to research for MND patients across Scotland, and provide a world stage on which to discuss our research findings and plans.
The ongoing support of our community fundraisers is critical. With the money you raise, we are able to offer seedcorn funding for pilot projects, and I am delighted to announce that this year we are also offering fully funded PhD studentships for 2014. Free use of a confocal microscope is another hugely significant asset for Centre Investigators, and we are extremely grateful to the RS Macdonald Charitable Trust for making this possible.

I would like to take this opportunity to wish all of our patients and their families, our donors and supporters a wonderful time over the festive season and my very best wishes for the New Year to come.
