UW leaders call for efficiency improvements
As UW–Madison faces historic budget cuts, university leaders are asking faculty and staff to offer suggestions to reduce costs and increase efficiency of university operations. Sustainability offers a tool to drive efficiency and improvements. Have an idea? Submit it here.

Putting waste in its place
Did you know your coffee cup lid and sleeve are recyclable? Follow a coffee cup on its journey through the UW–Madison recycling system. For more ideas to reduce waste and live sustainably, visit conserve247.wordpress.com during the month of March.
Great Lakes MOOC discussions at local libraries, on campus
The upcoming MOOC will feature meetings at 21 public libraries throughout Wisconsin to allow residents to discuss issues of changing weather and climate in the context of their own communities. Campus discussion groups are also enrolling.
Is climate change driving brutal weather?
In a recent study, Rutgers University and UW–Madison researchers linked current cold snaps in North America to a warming Arctic, where climate changes are happening much faster than in the Earth's middle latitudes.

Sustainability Summit: Sovereignty and Survival

The Sustainability Summit is an annual event that highlights investment and development opportunities in the green sector. The 2015 event will focus on the economics of sustainability and the necessities of sustainability, which include water, food, health and education.
Sustainability Sideshow
March 6, 2015 | 7-11 p.m. | Madison Children's Museum
The Sustainability Sideshow is a special fundraising event for Sustain Dane and the Madison Children's Museum. The Sustainability Sideshow will highlight the lighter side of sustainability with green-themed carnival games, upcycled art, local food and more. Tickets are $20 ahead of time and $25 at the door.

Food For Thought

Go vegetarian, cut your food footprint in half
Researchers found vegetarians had roughly half the food-related carbon footprint of meat eaters. Not ready to give up meat entirely? Just eating less meat could shrink your diet's footprint by one-third.
UN sustainability goals under fire
A new report on the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals offers some tough love. Although scientists support the goals, they conclude countries will struggle to achieve them unless the targets are clarified and quantified. (Viewing full article requires campus access or subscription.)
New Apple headquarters powered by the sun
Apple CEO Tim Cook recently announced the company’s plans to build a 130-megawatt solar farm to power its stores and facilities located in California. It will be the largest solar procurement deal by a company that’s not a utility.

Sustainable Dairy summer internship – Multiple locations
The Sustainable Dairy project is hosting three summer research mentorship opportunities for undergraduate students. Internships are available at three partner institutions: UW–Madison, Cornell University and Pennsylvania State University. All positions include work in dairy production system sustainability. Application deadline is March 1.
Earthjustice policy and legislation intern – Washington, D.C. 
Earthjustice, a nonprofit environmental law organization, is hiring a policy and legislation intern to conduct research, attend meetings, and draft policies, among other duties. Application deadline is not listed. 
Young Reporters for the Environment Competition
Young reporters between the ages of 13 and 21 are invited to investigate environmental issues and solutions in their communities and tell a story using words, photos and/or video. Submission deadline is March 13.

Slow Money Wisconsin Business Showcase – Madison, WI
Slow Money Wisconsin is accepting applications for its annual business showcase that highlights farm and food businesses. Presenters will get a one-on-one pitch with Wisconsin's leading food business coaches as well as financial advice. Application deadline has been extended to March 1.
Midwest Environmental Education Conference call for proposals
The Wisconsin Association for Environmental Education is hosting the Midwest Environmental Education Conference October 21-24 in Madison, WI. The organization is accepting proposals that address themes related to sustainable food, education on climate change, reaching underserved audiences and success stories in environmental education. Proposal deadline is March 27.

GRANTS

Discovery to Product (D2P) Igniter Award program
Discovery to Product (D2P) is currently accepting submissions for the next round of the D2P Igniter Award program. D2P is a partnership between UW–Madison and the Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation (WARF) that seeks to move technology and innovations to market. Submission deadline is March 15.
Wisconsin Energy and Sustainability Challenge
Teams of one to four students are invited to submit an original concept, which may include innovations related to energy production, storage, efficiency or sustainability. The competition includes two prices: the Global Stewards Sustainability Prize and the Dvorak Energy Prize. All submissions are due March 23.
Wisconsin Open Education Community Fellowship – Madison, WI
The Wisconsin Education Community Fellowship will support undergraduate student projects aimed at public engagement in the student's own Wisconsin community. The fellowship is intended to be complementary to UW–Madison's Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs). Early application deadline is March 12 and final application deadline is March 26.
Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy Postdoctoral Research Awards
The U.S. Office of Energy & Renewable Energy is accepting applications for Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE) Postdoctoral Research Awards, which support its mission by offering recent Ph.D. recipients the opportunity to conduct applied research at universities, national laboratories and other research facilities. Application deadline is May 7.
